Characters: Open to all Mission goers to Florence, Frankfurt, Prague and Vienna
Location: Florence, Frankfurt, Prague and Vienna
Rating: PG
Time: Jan 17, starts at about mid-morning
Description: Missions 151 and 152, crossposted to LJ

Florence
Florence had been immediately evacuated the moment Shibusen Florence recieved word from Death City about the danger to its population. Most of its citizenry had left, but the sentries, guards, and local militia (and mafia) had stayed to bravely defend the city. These were unfortunately the ones being affected by madness, to turn against each other with the same determination they had attempted to show their duty.

The streets of central Florence are plunged in chaos, with torches lit and some structures burning. Those who have managed to resist the madness to try to salvage the museums are hardpressed to defend themselves against those that have become crazy, but the light rain in the afternoon helps.

Frankfurt
It's cold and grey in Frankfurt but the streets are busy with activity. Germany has deployed its military to assist Shibusen Frankfurt in evacuating the people into shelters and taking down those that have begun to go mad. The problem is that even with their haste, it's still not enough, and they are becoming more overwhelmed by the hour. A number of makeshift forts and shelter are scattered throughout the city, requiring help to get through the crazed people outside. Kishin eggs in random areas are taking people down one by one in a frenzied eating craze.

Prague

The Prague agents are unlucky today with the weather, with the cold and chances of light snow. They're given coats or jackets before they leave Shibusen Prague, but are quickly urged on to the northwest part of the city. The heaviest of the violence and damage becomes concentrated there by afternoon, with people boarded up in buildings and kishin eggs preying on the people outside.

Vienna

It's snowing lightly in Vienna when the agents come in, and it seems that the situation there had gone from all right to downright crazy in the minute it took for the madness wavelength to sweep the city just an hour before. There is chaos as people run from murderous citizens and the police try to take them down. The prisons are already overflowing, some with people desperate to protect themselves from attack.

It doesn't take long before the first kishin eggs appear, people who accidentally kill others and eat their souls in madness.

After Kaoru spoke, she went into a quiet, almost uneasy silence. For a minute, a very long minute, Kaoru’s mind went exactly to the day her Father left for the Seinan War. His profile---his back---his steps--her grief--.

Father didn’t go because he wanted to fight..Father went because he wanted to protect people without taking life—to prevent people from killing others. It wasn’t naïve…Kamiya Kasshin Ryu is the sword that restores and revitalizes. Even if it's just to comfort an innocent --even if I can't protect everything--Father knew it still had value even in war. Because it's sword that gives life no matter where it is.

I remember—I knew he didn’t want to go to war but he also couldn’t stand by without doing something. Even when everyone thought his ideals were weak, Father continued to do what he believed in—I didn’t want him to go—I didn’t want him to leave me behind –I didn’t want to lose him..But protecting people was such a huge part of him---so I let him go. It must..have hurt him.

Her eyes blankly stared ahead as realization hit. In the same way--she was doing just as her Father had done. It sent a wave of grief and a mixture of bittersweet pride. She hated this situation with all of her heart..But she was doing what he would have done.

And then there was a hand on her shoulder.

Kaoru didn't know how she knew it was Kenshin, she just did. She lifted wide blue eyes to look up at him, swallowing.

Kenshin--was I just..dragging him along too? Without knowing it? Is this due to my selfishness? He knows how I am--and yet--I'm going to worry him again.

She mustered a smile, as reassuring as she could make it, her hand going on top of his on her shoulder, closing her eyes.

"..I'm worried about the civilians a lot--I want to focus on them most of all. The people who really want to fight can fight--but I'm worried about everyone in the City who can't. I know I can't do everything--and I don't want to. If I can just support one person--then I think things will be worth it. "

She lowered her eyes. "And you're here with me. Even though you don't want to be--because of this situation. " There was palpable guilt in her smile. Kaoru considered her ability again, and added, "If for some reason we get seperated, I'll use my soul ability to call out to you. " She tapped the side of her head. "So you'll hear my voice even if we aren't together. But I plan on staying together." She hoped it was reassuring.

Kaoru wasn't going to falter on her ideals, she hadn't for 17 years and she wouldn't start now.

Kenshin didn't ask her to speak, but she still knew just what to say. He still thought her decision naive, in many ways—the decision of one who knew nothing of situations like this. She wouldn't be able to protect everyone, and that would hurt her more than she understood yet; and yet there were some she could protect. This was Kaoru, through and through. She simply couldn't stand by when she had a chance to protect others. Maybe it was naive; but Kenshin would rather she make such a decision than have to understand precisely why it was so.

In the end she was doing what she thought was right, going into it wholeheartedly with the desire save lives. She didn't desire the fight like others; she desired something bigger. That was a view Kenshin wished more would hold.

And he smiled at her.

He didn't say anything about what he felt of being there. He didn't say anything about the situation of war, or the rising of his memories, or the lack of surety in their very situation. There was no point to it. They were there, and that was that, and all they could do now was fight to stay alive. All Kenshin could do was use his full strength to protect Kaoru and all the lives before him.

"Aa." He didn't let his hand drop from her shoulder. "Kaoru. When the time comes... fight, with everything."

Kaoru wasn't asking Kenshin to understand. She knew full well she'd never understand the horrors of war like he would--because she had never, would never wield a killer's sword. And she was an idealist---the world she envisioned was shining purely in her eyes, even at this instant.

To use her life as a way to protect others--this was Kamiya Kasshin Ryu.

But still, to see him agree with her, to have his support--to have him standing at her side when a small part of her knew he could be with the woman who smelled like white plums and smiled sad smiles---to have him believe in her even if he couldn't see it like she could--it meant so much.

She nodded firmly, her smile brave, determined. "Mm! I'll give it everything I've got. " And then, very quietly, "..I'm..a little scared, but --I think it would be so much more frightening--to be in that situation right now, and be unable to do anything. That's why--I've got to do the best I can."

Kaoru blushed.

"And..y-you're with me, Kenshin. I have you and Rangiku's support. I can't possibly fail."
