Characters: Lily Ivory and Eve
Location: Shopping District, Guest Businesses Building C
Rating: PG
Time: April 16, Afternoon
Description: Lily and Eve discover that a thief has been at work in the building with their shops…
After another morning of working at the park—the job felt like nine parts cleaning to one part actual gardening these days—Lily was on the way to her shop after a stop at her apartment to pick up the old prom dresses she had brought home to mend.
Arms full of satin, chiffon, and tulle from decades past, it looked as if a colorful, sparkly cloud was drifting down the street towards the building where ‘Yesterday’s Magic’ would soon open.
More laundry was on the witch’s agenda for the afternoon as well as picking up a large batch of clothes from the dry cleaner’s once she retrieved her purse from the shop. Leaving with all these poofy gowns the evening before, she had forgotten the bag behind the counter and it hadn’t seemed worth the trouble of going back for it when her keys were in her pocket.

It was on the first floor, right?

"Oh, hello, Eve. I haven't seen you in a while. How are you?"
no subject
Eve took the last few steps and stood on the same level as Lily. "I've been well. A bit busy though." It was good, she supposed because it meant they had business, but still...
"What about you?"
no subject
Lily sighed, a little tired. "I feel like I've had a million things to do lately with cleaning up the park and trying to get this store set up." She shifted the dresses to one arm and reached into her pocket with her free hand, fishing for the keys to the shop and wondering if that suspicious alien had told her about it...

Setting up a store was hard. She hadn't realized at first because Metokkori R and Hikan Café had both existed before they took over, but she got a sense for it when they started the Kero Cube. There was a lot to do! And she's seen the state of the park and didn't envy Lily's task at all.
"How long before you're ready to open?"
Keroro did, in fact, tell her about Lily's new store. Something about how she was stealing a spot in the building...
But that wasn't important right now. Right now, Eve's attention were fixed on one of the dresses Lily held. It was so cute (and probably way too big for her, but that hard;y mattered either).

"Should be next week. I just spoke to the people at the restaurant a couple of doors down yesterday about holding a themed party for the opening..." More time to prepare would have been nice but she really needed to get the shop open and start selling things if she was going to have the five hundred death dollars to pay the next month's rent on the first.
Ah, ha. Here was the key. But if Lily's vision hadn't been obscured by the pile of dresses, she might have noticed the key was unneeded. There were scratch marks around the lock and the door was open a hair.
no subject
"A themed party?" That sounded fun. She wonders if Keroro would go with her...
Lily didn't notice, maybe, but Eve was a Sweeper before she was anything else and while she couldn't see the marks around the lock well from where she was standing, she did notice the door wasn't closed fully.
"Did you leave the door open?"
no subject
"It's going to be a vintage theme with music and decorations from different decades." She gestured to the dresses in her arms with a smile. "Since I'll be selling vintage clothes."
"No, I—" Key in hand, she groped for the lock but her hand caused the door to swing open further. "What in the Sam Hill?! I could have sworn I locked it before I left last night!" The idea of a break-in hadn't occurred to her yet. She assumed it was just a lapse of memory with how busy she had been lately.
no subject
She frowned, "Are you sure?" Eve stepped over to get a better look at the door. Huh. "Is your lock new?"

"Stay behind me."

"Don't worry, I'll be fine." She's even acted as distractions before when they went after criminals.
...not that Lily would know this.

She stepped in front of Eve and reached for the protective medicine bundle—a small red leather bag—tied at her waist. Rubbing the bead-embellish bag, she entered the shop and called out, "Is anyone there?"
Silence. But could someone be hiding behind one of the racks or the counter? Or in the back room?
no subject
She wondered for a moment, what was in the small leather bag, but that wasn't the most important thing right now.
She followed Lily into the store, but instead of staying behind the older woman, Eve opts instead to stand beside her. There didn't seem to be anyone here, but appearances can be deceiving.
She made sure, though, to keep the door within her sight, just in case someone ran for it.
no subject
Scanning the room, there weren't any mysterious feet protruding from under the racks either. But when her eyes fell on the sales counter, she realized something was wrong and took a step in that direction.
"The cash register's open!" Her tone clearly implied it shouldn't be. What she couldn't see yet was that like the shop door, it had been pried open.
no subject
Still, Lily's observation spelled bad news for her.
"Is anything still in it?"
no subject
Lily hurried over to examine it, dumping the armful of dresses on top of the counter and frowning. More scratch marks, just like the shop door. "It's been pried open."
She hadn't noticed yet that her purse which she had forgotten last night was on the floor, its zipper gaping open.
no subject
Lily might not have noticed the bag, but Eve did. She walked over and crouched down with a frown. She reached out to pick it up, before turning her head a little.
"Is this yours?"
no subject
As if on cue, the small red bag she had hung over the shop door—an anti-theft charm—fell down with the metallic clink of old keys and scattered caraway seeds across the floor.
no subject
Eve was briefly curious about the thing that fell from above the door, but filed it away as something to ask about later.
"Was there anything else besides in your bag besides that?"
no subject
"Nothing of value. I guess we'd better call the police."

"The Watch?" It hadn't been something Lily paid much attention to.

If the natives couldn't even run a normal police department, maybe that would explain why this cotton-pickin' war had supposedly been going on for centuries.

She started slowly walking around the rest of the shop, making sure nothing else was disturbed.
no subject
"Is there anything else missing?"
no subject
There were a lot of clothes in the shop but if the thief was after money, they were unlikely to snatch suits or dresses. It wasn't as if such things could be pawned easily.
no subject
"There. Now the Watch knows about this."
no subject
"I need a locksmith, too, I reckon." And then frowned, remembering this shop was only rented unlike Aunt Cora's Closet. "Or do we need to call the real estate office about that?"

Meanwhile, she was going to get a broom and sweep up the scattered caraway seeds from the fallen anti-theft charm.
