Location: Desert right outside Death City

Time: Feb. 17 around 2 p.m.

Description: Auron teaches a few students how survive in a giant sandbox. With an assist from his partner





Yesterday's mission had tired out Auron, but not enough that he couldn't teach. He waited at the gates of Death City for the few students who seemed interested for a short field trip outside the walls.

Quick overview

Just in case people weren't keeping track or for the new folks, Auron went through a quick overview of survival kits and how to keep them on you at all times.

So... does 'at all times' really mean... at all times?

[His voice is quieter than usual, and he's lurking towards the back rather than right in front where he used to sit in class... up until that invasion that happened earlier in the month (after which he stopped attending class).

But he has no idea when it would be reasonable to carry a survival kit but he can think of a few instances where it'd be downright ridiculous.]

Well, if you're in your own home, no.

Mostly for missions. But you should have one prepared in your home in case something happens in the city. Even if you all you have is some gauze and tape, it could mean a big difference to someone who's hurt.

Right. So outside of missions... there really isn't much use for things like a tarp or a water bottle, is there.

You're probably pretty safe but like I said, try to put something together in your house in case we have another earthquake and there's no power.

[After some deliberation Hades has decided to drop by to one of Auron's classes and is now standing at the outer edge of the small circle of students while he explains about the basics.

Once he is done the god steps closer to inspect one of the kits, brows furrowed mildly.]

They seem to be quite a gamble.

What, the kits?

What else? I do not bet on the surviving chances of individuals. [They'll all die in the end anyway, sooner or later.]

Yes, we all die someday. But the kits help us from dying sooner than we'd like.

Finding water

"All right. When you find yourself in the desert, the most important thing is to have enough water. If you don't have any on you, you better find some. So, any of you know how you'd do that?"

With that said, he opened it up to the students to see if they had the answer before showing them.

Kanji just looked confused, scratching his head. Deserts were there because of a lack of rainfall, right? So how do you even go about finding water?

Then again, there were animals that lived in the desert, along with (few) plants. Cacti downright thrived in the arid conditions. As he shook what he felt was another pound of sand out of his hair - why was it so windy out today!? - he chose to try and let another person try and answer. He'll just learn from them.

U-unless... Auron was going to randomly pick someone. Kanji tried to make himself inconspicuous.

[Takuto was trying to be even more inconspicuous by standing behind this blond boy and then... he stares at the back of this blond boy's head. This hair looks... oddly familiar, even though he's certain he's never actually seen the back of this head before.

But there's something familiar about the color... or else Takuto is just looking forward to getting his own bleach job done later that evening.

So this boy in front of him will just have to put up with that feeling that you get when someone is staring relentlessly at the back of your head.]

Kanji and Takuto. Let's hear an answer from either of you.

He knew the feeling that he was being watched, far more used to it than normal. As Takuto stared away at the back of his head, the other boy could just as well have been firing optic lasers; Kanji could feel the stare.

Gray eyes turned over his shoulder in a swift movement of the turn of his head, then narrowed. "The hell're you starin' at--"

Paused, a brow furrowed. Wait, didn't he talk to this guy not too long ago?

He looked forward again when he heard his name, and when Takuto's name was addressed, Kanji's suspicions were confirmed.

"Uh..." Shit. Come up with something, Kanji! How do you find water in a desert with some plants--

"Dig? Around the plants?"

Finding water

[Sheena's never been in any type of school, but she's used to something like this. Although she's not sure she knows the answer, she raises her hand slightly before letting it drop.]

All right, Sheena. You know anything about finding water?

Ummm...A cactus usually can be used to get water. Some have fruit you can eat, too.

True on both counts. It's also good to try to find a dried riverbed or to collect dew in the morning with a few tools.

[Up until now he has made a point of looking bored and unimpressed with the class. He knows that it's either that or showing how happy he is about just being able to feel the hot desert wind playing with his hair and the sand beneath his shoes again, even if this desert is no comparison to the one he was familiar with back in Egypt. He isn't ready to let others see such a private part of him.]

First off you start looking if there are any plants, animals or insects around, right?

If there's enough vegetation around, there's a decent water source. Cacti are the best.

Building shelter

"If you're going to spend any time in the desert, it's important to not only dress for it, but carry the right supplies to help make a shelter."

People might be wondering what the tarp was for. It was one of the most important parts of desert travel.

He felt he was dressed for it. He'd left behind his usual long-sleeve for a tank-top, a pair of lighter pants, and his glasses. Kanji had to wonder why he still wasn't sweating his ass off regardless of standing out in the desert, but he had to assume it was because of the dry heat.

Didn't make the sun any less relentless, chuckling away in the sky at what Kanji hoped wasn't the survival class. Knowing how to build a shelter was more than a little handy... he just hoped it wasn't a ton of work.

Not that he'd let himself come off as a lazy kid to this guy.

The tarp he understood, but what else was needed? ...Ugh, his shoes kept sinking into the soft sand. He swore it was the heat that was letting sand piss him off.

"First thing about a desert is to dress for it. Kanji, you almost have to keep enough of your skin covered or else take a lot of sun screen with you. You also need to wear boots. Sand can get in your shoes and grind against your feet."

But enough about that, Auron walked a little bit to find a bit of a valley between dunes. "There's a few things we can do with this tarp. Can anyone figure out how it should be anchored?"

Kanji heard his name and snapped out of his brooding, shifting the stance of his feet when Auron mentioned boots, and scratching the back of his head when he spoke of covering more skin.

He'd never had a sunburn in his life, but he'd also never been stuck out in a desert before, either. He supposed this was good to know, and nodded, though his face stung: Why'd he have to get singled out like that? People were staring.

He held his head high regardless... screw 'em. Hell, he'd try and prove he wasn't a complete moron, and jumped right out with an answer.

"Weigh the corners with rocks, or... take summa these sticks like tent poles?"
