Time: Feb. 17 around 2 p.m.

Description: Auron teaches a few students how survive in a giant sandbox. With an assist from his partner





Yesterday's mission had tired out Auron, but not enough that he couldn't teach. He waited at the gates of Death City for the few students who seemed interested for a short field trip outside the walls.

The only way it can work is if you have the tools with you.

*He knelt down in the sand.* You have to dig a good hole and then another at the very center with a container in it. You need a tube of some kind to go from the container to out of the hole. You put a sheet of plastic over the hole and weigh it down with rocks. One rock goes in the center so the plastic falls, but not to the bottom of the hole. It collects water into the container and you drink it through the tube.

Wow. I never thought of that. But....wouldn't it be too hot to dig in the desert?

Depends on the time of day. If you have to do any involved digging, do it when it's cooler.

Oh, yeah. I didn't think about that. [She had had her cards, so she really didn't have to think too much about having to do things like that before.]

Ummm...Would this be a good setup in case it rains?

If it's raining, it's better to have a pit and make a funnel toward your container to catch the water. It doesn't rain very often in the desert though.

I know, and sometimes they're fast. [Thinks.] So, setting a second pit up just in case it rains might be good idea though right?

Only if you have enough material for it. But more than one is good.

[Nods. It would be silly to carry extra material for water when she'd lose more water just by doing so.]

Are there other ways to find water? [Sometimes things happen and you have to act fast, since there aren't always cacti around and you don't have time to dig a hole.]

If you're lucky and can find an oasis. Finding plants that store water is the best bet.

*shakes head* You almost need a native guide to help you there.

And we don't have anyone like that here, do we? [She's beginning to miss her Water Cards even more at this point.]

Does the desert around here have any caves? [She remembers how cool and damp some of the caves back home were.]

I haven't explored that much of it so I don't know. I could ask Shibusen for that information.

That would be useful to know. And to be honest, I'd rather know before going out there instead of trying to find them on my own. [If done correctly, traveling can be easier if caves are used as planned shelters.]
