A day after Medusa's defeat, Shibusen makes an announcement on the network: BREW is acting up again but instead of bringing new people in, it has created a portal.

It's in the Kishin Chamber, available to anyone who wants to go through it. Anyone who looks into it will see the place they came from, frozen in time. The moment you step through everything resumes and, maybe you'll forget or maybe you won't. Either way, there's no need to hurry right now. Shibusen assures all of you they will keep a sharp eye on BREW's energy readings and tell you the moment anything changes. For now, the portal is stable so take all the time you need to say goodbye and settle everything before you go.

[ it seemed he wasn't the only one lingering on the sidelines, though Sasuke was far less indecisive than many of the others he'd seen. though he and Naoto had never been what one would call friendly, he knew her face well enough. she had been here nearly as long as he had.

Sasuke wasn't approaching her, or rather, he hadn't intended to be— but when she looks him he draws to a stop either way, regarding her for a long moment. ]

Are you going?

[pishirogane]

[No, they weren't friends, but they were acquaintances working towards the same ends. Those ends are over here though... but she'll still nod to him when he asks.]

I may not be in a war at home, but I have a job to uphold and a promise to keep.

[sharingan]

Hn.

[ a promise to keep. that alone would have been enough for Sasuke to return home, before Itachi had arrived. he regards her for a long moment, then his gaze goes up toward the building. ]

What are you waiting for?

[pishirogane]

[While he looks towards the building, she turns towards the stairs.]

... I'm waiting for Kanji. We might not remember out time here so we'll need to say goodbye as well.

[sharingan]

Will it matter?

[ it's a rather existential question, but it's a thought he has had. if nobody remembers (and he, himself, had lapses of his memory when he had been back), then did it matter to say goodbye? ]

[pishirogane]

It will.

[She says it without much thought because it's true. Whether or not they remember when they return home, it's still a memory imprinted within Death City. Somewhere, it does exist and remains to take solace in the fact she's forgotten growing so close to Kanji.]

[sharingan]

[ Sasuke regards her for a long moment, considering her words. he couldn't quite agree with the sentiment— if nobody remembered, then what was the sense in it? once upon a time, he'd considered the freedom of his family name would be erasing everyone who remembered anything about it.

before, he might have voiced this opinion. now, he keeps it to himself. ]

[Foolish, she still finds it necessary. Silent for a while, she decides to speak.]

Are you going back?

[sharingan]

[ in her silence, Sasuke's attention wanders back to the building behind her. ]

No. [ the answer comes easy, simple— so much simpler than the path it had taken him and the changes he'd been through to arrive at it. ]

I'm staying.

[pishirogane]

I see.

[Staying behind... had never been a real option for her. There's a life there that's been on hold for too long.]
