Characters: Dolorosa and you!
Location: Holocaust Mall, the streets of the shopping district, or the City Park
Rating: G, I guess?
Time: May 21st, afternoon to evening
Description: Dolorosa is out and about, getting some shopping done and enjoying the sunlight. Feel free to have your character find her!
[Since her arrival and reunion with her family, Dolorosa has taken some much needed time to herself, choosing temporary isolation to put her thoughts in order. It works, and by the time she decides to finally explore Death City and see how much has changed since she left months ago, her thinkpan feels much clearer than before.
She heads for the Holocaust Mall, intent on finding nice fabrics to create new clothes for herself and her family, and takes a small detour through the City Park, to sit down and catch some sun for a little while.
It feels good to be back again.]

The park on the outskirts of Death City, though quite far from Casualty Communal, became a spot that Mindfang frequented. Somewhat of a cool breeze passed through there often, even if the desert refused to cool during the night hours. She'd taken to using this place to write in a makeshift journal much like the one she owned back home. Pickpocketing a few unsuspecting strangers allowed spare cash to purchase necessities here and there. Dressed in the outfit she had appeared here in, she did not carry her usual bravado even if the way she carried herself suggested a woman with confidence and class--and let's not forget a touch of something dangerous.
Mindfang nearly ventured to leave, but something caught her attention. It is odd. The last time she remembered seeing horns of such a shape, she had been playing a dirty trick on Dualscar. She remembered writing how the slave would never know how thoroughly she had been used but, in turn, Mindfang would never fathom how quickly she could become smitten with someone of a low caste. To be sure, she must get a look at this troll's face. Without much conscious thought, she's already moving forward to the bench, leaning down to tap this woman on the shoulder.]
You look much like someone that I know. Can ask your name?
City Park. :)
city park
Normally, she keeps to herself. Today, she happens to notice someone she doesn't recognise but with traits that she does - the grey skin and horns reminiscent of a friend of hers.
She's made a mistake once before in assuming. And she's not one to disturb others easily. But there's no harm in making sure, right?
And so she approaches, pausing a little distance away and her tone not quite disguising her timid nature]
Um...excuse me. I don't suppose you know Psii-san, do you?
no subject
Her senses aren’t any less sharper, but she allows herself to become distracted by her peaceful surroundings, even going as far as closing her eyes. Yes… the park is one of the places she enjoys the most in Death City, no doubt.
She notices the sound of footsteps drawing near, but doesn’t mind much, because a few humans have already walked past her since the moment she sat down. But when that stranger walks even closer and stops, Dolorosa knows that, whoever this is, they aren’t simply walking by.
And when she hears that voice, so familiar and yet foreign at the same time, she feels her usually warm blood run cold.
It isn't Aranea. It isn’t Vriska, either, who she had the misfortune of meeting before the young spidertroll was sent home a long time ago. No, this is someone else entirely.
It’s her.]
Dolorosa, [She says, quietly, before finally looking up, her body tense but not fearful, and her dignity fully intact. Mindfang is no longer her Mistress here; Dolorosa has a life of her own once more, and she can reclaim her name, her title, and her sign.] My name is Dolorosa.
no subject
Almost. She would recognize those nubby horns anywhere.
She smiles widely before she can really help it, but then tries to restrain her joy at seeing Signless’s descendant once more, and covers her mouth with a hand, trying to compose herself and bring that smile down to a polite one. She manages to do so, but she can’t hide the slight note of affection in her voice when she walks up to him and speaks, careful in her approach. After all, she still remembers very clearly how Karkat and his friends reacted when they saw an adult troll for the first time.
“Karkat?”
no subject
I do.
[She smiles politely at the girl.]
Is he your friend, as well?
no subject
But it's too late now; thankfully, from the polite smile she receives, she feels just a little more at ease. There's a lot she still doesn't know about trolls, but she seems kindly enough and Anri's rather more used to non-humans now.]
Yes...at least, I'd like to think so. I haven't really been able to speak to many of his friends from home yet, though.
[Probably for the best, given certain of the other trolls here]
no subject
"Hi. Dolorosa, right?" He can only hope she's as even tempered as her descendant.
no subject
Regardless, she does notice that she isn't happy to see her and how can she blame her? Mindfang shifts to sit on the bench, but a bit of a distance from the other. Being timid is not what she is about. Why is she so far off her game?]
Such a beautiful name. [She comments softly, shifting her new blank journal into her lap. Maybe it is best to stay on the safe side of this conversation. As she has been warned, Death City stripped them of much of their powers and strength. Should the Dolorosa have been here long, she doesn't necessarily stand a chance. She's without a weapon and doesn't even know her own Meister ability. That's much too vulnerable for her liking.] Do you know who I am? I recognize you from before. . .from Alternia.
no subject
She watches as the other woman sits down, feeling glad that the other troll has kept her distance… but at the same time, Dolorosa wants to move closer.
She doesn’t.]
Thank you, [She replies just as softly, her eyes moving from Mindfang to a small flock of birds flying in the distance.] Yes. I know who you are, Marquise.
[It feels odd to call her that instead of Mistress; odd, wrong, and absolutely liberating.]
And if you know who I am in return, then BREW has brought you here from a point in time when you have already claimed me as your own.
[She speaks calmly and politely. There is no point in avoiding the elephant in the room, not when it’s as obvious as this, and she would rather make things clear from the start than have everything snowball into an unmanageable, or dangerous, situation.]
no subject
That's what she liked most about this one; her ability to keep her dignity in class. There's only a certain kind of person who isn't dwarfed by the ambition of others.]
Actually, yes that would be right. [She muses, her eyes shifting toward the other troll.] In fact, when I left, you were having a proper set of clothes made for you by one of my crewmen. He kept pestering me about how rags did not a suit a lady of your stature.
[And they truly didn't, but such things that she neglected served to keep her under Dualscar's radar for the time being. Until she left anyway.]
What point in the timeline do you hail from?
no subject
Ah, yes. In all sincerity, I could have made them myself… I have always enjoyed creating my own garments.
[At the question of which point in their timeline Dolorosa comes from, her smile fades, but she doesn’t let anything else hint at how truly uncomfortable that question makes her feel.]
Just a few nights after that.
[And that is all Mindfang needs to know.]
no subject
“You are correct, yes.” He obviously doesn’t remember her, but despite the twinge of sadness she feels in her chest at that, Dolorosa doesn’t let her thoughts take her through a path of sadness and melancholy. Karkat is here, and even if he has no recollection of having met her in the past, she can still get to know him in the present. “Have I disturbed your thoughts, dear?”
no subject
I’m glad… It pleases me to know he has been making friends here in Death City.
[She has always been so protective of him, the same way she’s been protective of her son and his Disciple, and she truly is happy to know that he is socializing and meeting new people.]
To be fair, there are quite a few of us trolls in Death City, although this doesn’t mean we are all familiar with each other. Have you met any other trolls besides myself and Psii?
no subject
[There's a tinge of something that hits Mindfang, but she doesn't press on it. She cannot let her curiosity get the best of her though it is her best and worst trait. It's not like she deserved a detailed explanation but she expected one. That comes from the sort of relationship they had. Mistress and slave.
But even so. . .]
I have to admit that seeing a familiar face makes it easier to adjust to such a strange place. [Idly, she flips open the new journal, and decides to multitask by writing her first entry here while talking.] It seems fate granted me a second chance with this. As it were, as long as I am here, I need't worry of my death by the hands of someone I love.
[Making conversation with someone you don't have the best relationship with is much harder than she expected it to be. Mindfang had too much pride to say what she really wanted; she's glad Dolorosa is here and unharmed. Hell, even if she has no right to her as property she can still see her, no?]
no subject
[Maybe she's wrong, but it's the impression she's got from him. It's also something that draws her to him, even as she's never suffered anything quite so horrific as being used to power a battleship.]
No, not in person. I did speak to someone who types like Psii-san does, though...he called himself TA?
[Which doesn't sound like a name to her but perhaps it's common for trolls]
no subject
"No, I mean, yes, but it's alright. I've been thinking and getting nothing done for too long already. I can take a break and talk to you." She seems nice enough, and she's Kanaya's ancestor and also Signless's "mother" and Signless has been nothing but kind to him, so he figures there's no way she's an asshole. "I've been trying to figure out how to turn into a weapon, by myself, without having to throw myself down stairs, but I'm not that great at meditating." Understatement of the century.
no subject
Fair enough. I’m certain that you know better than anyone how to handle your crew.
[No matter how Mindfang made her feel in the past (or how she’s making her feel in the present), and no matter how famous or infamous she was in Alternia, no one could deny that she knew just how to play her cards right and how to lead her crew and her ship to glory.]
It makes it easier, yes, [She agrees, glancing at the journal the other troll flips open and then looking away when she begins to write; as curious as Dolorosa is, she doesn’t mean to pry.
The following words make her frown slightly, however. The jade blooded troll doesn’t understand; why would Mindfang worry about such a thing in the first place? If she were to be perfectly honest, Dolorosa would admit to having some trouble imagining her former Mistress having that sort of feelings for another troll, no matter how kind she may have been to her in the past.]
I must admit I don’t understand what you are referring to.
no subject
“I see,” she finally says, after listening to the younger troll explain his current situation. “If you haven’t been successful, and if you have already experienced frustration, then you must take a break before continuing.”
There is no 'I can take a break'; he quite obviously needs one, and she's going to make sure he gets it. She begins to walk, slowly, silently inviting Karkat to follow her.
“Have you asked other Weapons for advice? Perhaps they would be able to guide you through this process.”
no subject
Her expression becomes amused when Anri brings up someone who can only be Sollux, and she chuckles softly, remembering the young troll quite clearly.]
Ah yes, Sollux. I am quite familiar with him, as well, [She says with a smile, but then her expression turns a little bit serious, even though she doesn’t stop smiling.] You must understand, however, that not all of us are pleasant or harmless... You should be careful when approaching a troll in person rather than through the network.
[Their race is infamous for its aggressive, dominant and extremely violent nature, but does Anri know any of this?]
no subject
[She repeats it to herself, more so she'll remember than for anything else. She's not sure if that means she should use his name next time she speaks to him or not but she'll cross that bridge when she comes to it.
Of course, she knows that Alternia is a violent place, that they're a race geared for war but, perhaps because Psii is the only one she's spoken to in person before, she hasn't quite considered as far as Dolorosa explains here]
I see...I'll remember that.
[Not that she needs much dissuading from approaching people in the first place. She's still not entirely sure what possessed her to approach here, and she's not sure if she should take that as a more direct warning or not.]
Um...I can go, if I'm disturbing you.
no subject
I don't either. It had been mentioned to me in passing. It is a ludicrous idea to think I shall meet my end at the hands of another. I am reluctant to believe such tales of demise but then again the future is always changing.
[She's contemplating what to write when she glancing to the troll beside her.] Though I wonder what your tense nature is about. [Mindfang is blunt and tactless as ever.] You have called me Marquise and not Mistress. What have you to fear if you are embracing freedom?
[There is a mixture of resentment and indifference in that statement. Having this woman as property allowed her the joys of a different kind. She had no choice but to indulge her Mistress and that's what Mindfang preferred. It meant she never had to deal with the hang-ups of rejection. She could take what she wanted, when she wanted, no matter what. Some part of her missed that dynamic of their relationship.]
no subject
"Well, yeah, but asking for help would be giving up on my goal, which is to do this by myself. If I can figure it out soon, maybe I'll ask for some help, but I want to at least try to fucking get it right first."
no subject
[After all, if someone had come up to her when she was a young troll and told her that she’d leave behind the duties of her caste to raise a mutant grub, she would have seriously doubted the integrity of their thinkpan.
Mindfang’s bluntness and tactlessness don’t surprise her at all, but the predictability of her speech doesn’t make her any less tense. Dolorosa’s hands tighten on her lap.]
Nothing at all, [She begins, speaking just as calmly as before, and turns her head to look at the other troll. Is that resentment she can detect in Mindfang’s voice, or is she imagining things?] But if I am embracing freedom, as you so correctly put it, then I will address you as an equal and not as my owner.
[Dolorosa watches her former Mistress quite closely, gauging out her reaction. Those words could have gotten her culled in Alternia faster than you can say ‘hemospectrum’, not only because of their challenging nature (a slave speaking in such a way to the one who owns her? Ridiculous!) but also because of how it implies that her caste is equal to Mindfang’s.
(And it is, but Dolorosa is well aware that not every troll has accepted the Signless’s teachings as truth.)
She isn’t afraid of what Mindfang can do, or of being attacked, but she won’t hesitate to flee or strike back in return if needed be; sweeps of fighting to defend the Mother Grub and her progeny have turned her into an excellent fighter.]
no subject
This doesn't go to say that she agrees with their hemospectrum but she is comfortable in its vices. Mindfang just chuckles and shakes her head. How naive.]
I cannot argue with that claim as this society does not recognize blood caste quite like we do. [She pauses, a small smirk growing on her lips.] Though I offer you a word of caution; I would be careful whom you say you are equal to.
[Maybe she's a bit stuck in the comforts a high blood status allows her, but that delusion of power will soon come to an end. Death City runs by very different means and she must adapt to survive, as they say. She scribbles something down quickly, as if remembering a detail.]
I've always wanted to ask you something; who were you before I stole you from Dualscar?
no subject
Given the way Mindfang chuckles and shakes her head, the jade blood knows she is quite far from agreeing with that, and maybe that she’s even mocking her, but Dolorosa doesn’t mind. She has always had remarkable faith in her son’s teachings throughout her life, and even during her enslavement.
At that smirk, Dolorosa smiles serenely in turn.]
I’m not afraid, and I will stand for what I believe in.
[Spoken firmly, but not defiantly, with the certainty of one who fought and suffered for what she believed in.
She’s surprised that her former Mistress wants to know who she was, but she has no problems with enlightening her about her past. Dolorosa’s posture doesn’t change when she speaks again, but even so, it’s as if she sits up straighter than before, and there is a hint of something else in her voice, in the way she holds herself now: pride.
Not the pride of someone bragging about the actions of their past, or wanting to take credit for what they’ve done, but the strong feeling brought on by having raised a small, special grub to adulthood. The pride a mother feels for her son.]
I am the one who protected and raised the Signless to maturity. His first follower.
no subject
I'm sorry, what? [That's going to take a second to click in her brain. Adult trolls just...didn't raise grubs. They weren't meant to. Mindfang does take note in the air of pride, but she's still terribly confused. It's not so much that the idea itself is odd, but being a Mother?]
There's no way. You have to be joking.
no subject
“I was under the impression that many Weapons transform for the first time upon finding themselves in a dangerous situation. As far as I’m aware, transforming for the first time through meditation is very hard, so it’s only natural that it should take some time to happen.”
no subject
Not at all, I was merely warning you that not all of us trolls are as pleasant as Psii and myself.
You may call me Dolorosa. What is your name?
no subject
I apologize, I-- [She takes a deep breath before continuing, and it’s clear that she didn’t mean to mock or make fun of the other troll; the look on Mindfang’s face was just too priceless, that’s all. But on the other hand, her body is significantly less tense than before.] I meant every word I said. I’m not lying.
no subject
Anri Sonohara. It's nice to meet you, Dolorosa-san.
no subject
[She smiles once more. Dolorosa hasn’t been able to have a casual conversation with a stranger in so long, she’s almost afraid she lost her touch.]
Have you been in Death City for long?
no subject
But why bother? If they aren't chosen by a lusus they are meant to be culled.
[Even for low bloods that's just a way of life.]
no subject
[She isn’t bothered or annoyed by Mindfang’s words. She’s right, and Dolorosa knows it, but how can she even begin to explain how special that little red grub was?]
He didn't hatch like the others. I found him in a crater, while running an errand, and I realized he was very different from every other grub I had ever seen. [She doesn’t notice the fondness and warmth in her voice, but it’s quite obviously there. Dolorosa looks down at her hands, seemingly lost in her own memories.] To this day, I don’t know what made me take that grub into my arms and leave my duties behind me, but I don’t regret a single thing.
;w; dat icon awwweee babies
You really are influenced by him. [She comments, but this isn't to be taken offense. The Dolorosa is the best choice for such a thing if she does tend to the Mother Grub.] I saw that when I first met you.
[The Dolorosa, unlike any slave she had owned, never once had a lack of pride or dignity. Breaking her spirit proved nearly impossible and there wasn't much need for it when she willingly preformed most duties that Mindfang requested. The others were. . .influences by unseen forces but the Cerulean blood couldn't help herself. The Dolorosa was and still is one of the most attractive trolls she has come across, blood caste aside. Her lust got the best of her and she almost wished she treated her better. Almost.]
What was it like to travel with him? I can't imagine too many were happy to hear his revelations on a system that is strictly enforced.
no subject
Just over two weeks. How about you?
no subject
I love it so much! c:
The Signless has always been both her greatest source of strength and her greatest weakness, after all.]
He was always very careful, [Dolorosa began, thinking back to those days. It wasn’t hard to do so; her memory was flawless, especially when it came to her life as a nomad, travelling throughout Alternia with her family.] He knew who to speak to, and how to speak to them. And he always started out with very few trolls, and then they would spread his word themselves, because they in turn would know who to speak to. And then we would return to that same place, perigees or sweeps later, and they would greet him like a hero and welcome him into their own hives.
[For the most part, Dolorosa had let him preach and speak to villagers personally without interfering, but she had always kept a careful eye on him, never letting her guard down.]
no subject
“You can be useful even if you don’t transform as soon as you wish to, Karkat. You are useful to your friends just by being in this place; I’m certain that they missed you, and that your presence here motivates them and makes them feel happier than before.”
She doesn’t know his friends, but if he truly calls them that, then she’s sure that they must feel that way for him.
no subject
[But that's not completely true, is it?]
I was here before, months ago, but BREW returned me to our world, until it decided to bring me back once again.
no subject
[That's a new one on her. Not that she's surprised that it hasn't come up before now - it's not as though she's the sort to be remembered when she hasn't been around. Sometimes even when she has been]
So...do you remember being here before?
no subject
no subject
Some part of her wondered, idly, what would have happen should the Signless have succeeded in professing the truth of his teachings to others. What sorts of different lives would they live? She smiles for a second, though its not sure why. She also wonders how that angry little brat Karkat would have turned out in a world that didn't condemn his mutant red blood.]
I can imagine they would. Eventually someone will grow tired of living in hierarchy enforced by their Empress.
[Or they'd be culled. There's that option too. Must of the uppity ones were.]
I'm surprised any of you managed to evade authority as long as you did.
