Characters: Death the Kid and Liz Thompson
Location: Gallows Mansion
Rating: ...uh....G...?
Time: May 10, late evening
Description: He's baaaaaaaaaaack. Or rather, he has been back, just intermittently. But the last trip was likely his last for a while and he was in much need of R&R.
Kid could not remember the last time he stepped inside his house let alone his own bed. A few days? Weeks? Months?
In secret he had been going out to different cities, bases, countries to see how things were going. Some were more harrowing than others, and the recent in-city uprising. He almost cancelled his last two trips, but political pressure and possible rising threats elsewhere pushed him out. The last trip had been an overall success (except for the fact that at one point he failed to resonate with Spirit and had to almost cut it early), but now he had to deal with the matters back home.
"Liz...Patti...I'm back," he called out and surprised himself by how...tired he sounded. It was also disconcerting when the hallway started to swim before his eyes and he had to grab the edge of a nearby table.
He had been fine just a few hours before. So why was he— He just quickly shook his head. No, no time to be failing now. There were reports he needed to read, mission logs to look over, files to sort through.

"Yeah. Kind of a hard habit to break. I can't sleep unless I get in that last check. Just to make sure."
Back in Brooklyn, it was to make sure that no one had taken her sister in the middle of the night while she caught some Z's. She'd never been able to shake that feeling, expanding instead to make her make sure that Kid didn't get taken, too.
Irrational and illogical but she couldn't get rid of it.

"You should know better than anyone that this is likely the safest place in Death City, so there is no need for you to patrol it. Especially when I am here."

She put her hand on her chest over her heart.
"Saw it happen too many times to people who were staying together for protection: go to sleep together, wake up with the other person gone. I know the odds are ridiculous against it happening here, but there's always that little part that nags at me, saying it just hasn't happened yet."

He understood—at least in theory. He never personally experienced so there was no way he could truly understand, but he understood that this was a legitimate concern that she had grown up practically her whole life with. So his question was more of legitimate interest rather than any sort of critique.
Part of it was he was a bit bothered that despite their security, she still felt uneasy.

She then grimaced.
"'Course I messed that up tonight."

"But I'll be fine, Liz. Just go back to bed."

She was worried about her Meister and wanted to ensure he wouldn't be waking up any time soon.

"Yes, I'm certain."

"Just relax, okay? And if you start making fun, I'm going to knock you unconscious."
She started humming a lullaby she'd learned from an old music box she'd found and played for Patti to help her sleep until it wore out and wouldn't play anymore. She'd never come up with words for it, simply humming the tune and stroking her sister's hair, but she refrained from doing the latter here. She didn't want to send Kid into a tizzy over asymmetrical hair when she was trying to help him.

Well.
That was definitely not expected.
It was also a bit...odd. Well he was going to be eighteen this year—having someone hum a lullaby was not really something a normal teenager expects, let alone a god. That said, it was actually a bit soothing.
And it was more for that reason that a tiny little snerk and chuckle escaped him. He didn't mean to, but this whole thing was...well that was his reaction.

...Well that brought a little of a somber thought. But just a very little one and his expression remained the same despite his idle reminiscing of his youth.

He wanted to give his thanks, but it would have to wait until the morning.
