What do you know about people leaving and coming back?

[Mustang is the most long-term resident Mello knows, and this issue is especially relevant lately.]

I know first-hand that people don't remember. Have you ever heard of someone being dead at home, and coming back here more than once?

No, but I do know or have heard of other dead people walking, so to speak.

It's a question of how BREW operates. It can obviously pull people from any point in time. Can it pull them from different timelines, is what I'm wondering.

Exactly. If someone from a point in time before me changed things, would I know? Assuming they remembered enough to do that when they went home, of course.

It went beyond that, actually. Some things and people were entirely different from the timeline I come from.

The rules and origins of alchemy, one of the dominant sciences in my world, are different from how they were in the other version that I accomplished. Events went differently as well, and the nature of the Homunculus that my allies and I ended up dealing with was also different.

Can you trace the differences back to a particular event?

There are too many fundamental differences to really say. Pretty much everything went in another direction.

[Mello's trying to make sense of this, and trying to imagine how something similar might go down with his world, assuming it's even possible. He's always felt the exceptions to any given rule are the most interesting, because they point to the cracks, to the underpinnings of the rule and where they're weak, and this absolutely counts.]

Maybe it would be more effective to ask what's the same. The people, I assume, or you wouldn't know it was the same world. The existence of alchemy--my world doesn't have it, just as yours doesn't have Kira.

Do you know of anyone else in this situation?

No. I've asked before, but I didn't exactly get decisive answers.

I haven't heard anyone else mention something like this happening.

[Is it an exception? Are the two worlds in question different after all? That stretches coincidence far beyond the breaking point. Mello toys with his drink, swirling the liquid around. If it's possible for one world, it could be possible for another.]

The people from the other version of your world: have they been to Death City before?

Some of them came back multiple times. In every instance, they did not remember what they had gone through in Death City.
