[Morning Training!]

Morning Training happens every day in the city, and most days get handwaved. Once a month a log goes up to play out interactions and teaching. It happens from 6 am to 9 am, and this time it's happening December 31st, in-game.

I'll be linking/indexing once threads are made.

The man with the stitches across his face? [Shuurei had never spoken to him but she remembered him from the tour. The stitches had reminded her of the epidemic in Sa Province.] Are there different methods then?

And I don't believe we've met before. I'm Shuurei and I've only been in this city for a few weeks. [smiles]

Yes. And yes, I suppose there are.

[Insert gentlemanly bow here, and an equally gentlemanly smile.]

[also bows] Nice to meet you, Lord Miles.

Do you have advice for discovering a Meister ability? Someone told me that they’re usually based on personality but I haven’t noticed being able to do anything unusual since arriving here.

[Ah..."Lord Miles", huh. He didn't get called that very often. Especially back home. He hesitates a bit, wondering if he should raise an objection of sorts, but decides to shelve the issue for now.]

They may be based on personality, but others are patterned after a talent, or a skill.

A talent, such as music? And I've worked many different jobs. [This sounded like it wasn't going to be simple if there were that many possibilities...]

Yes. What were these jobs, if I may?

Well, I took whatever jobs I could find while growing up since my family was poor. I did bookkeeping, taught children at the local temple, and sometimes took jobs playing the erhu in teahouses.

For a few months, I was… a tutor of sorts to the Emperor. [She’d really rather not explain that consort thing…] I worked as a page in the Ministry of Finance for a month and after I passed the Imperial Exams, I became a government official. I shortly served as co-governor of Sa Province and then worked for the Censorate, investigating things, before I found myself here. [She didn't know much about the types of abilities other Meisters had so she wasn't really sure how any of it might translate into an ability.]

[He takes these down quickly on a clean page of his organizer. When she finishes, he looks up with a small, approving smile.]

That is an impressive rèsumè, Miss Shuurei. And you say you have done investigation work?

[Please excuse him, he was pinged by INVESTIGATION.]

[She nods.] The Censorate mainly investigates corruption and wrongdoing although it also handles some other matters like prison inspections. I've worked on cases of art forgery and counterfeiting and a few others. [To be exact, her getting involved in some of those cases had been her meddling before she was hired by the Censorate. She wasn't sure if she should mention the assassination plot where she had been placed as Princess Jyusan's double. And the assignment she had been on, to find the Emperor and bring him back to the capital, was supposed to be confidential.]

Is this more likely to be related to my ability?

[He nods, writing it all down.]

It is possible, yet at the same time, many other possibilities also exist, such as your ability being connected to music.

Are there other people who have abilities related to music then? I haven't heard too much about other people's abilities yet. Are they usually used in fighting? [She had assumed they would be but she couldn't really picture how an ability connected to music would help.]

I believe I have read about an ability related to singing...and no, some abilities may not be as closely tied to combat, such as mine.

My ability is an amplified form of persuasive speaking, which I can use to convince and command others.

Oh, I only played an instrument so I don’t know if I’m likely to have that ability.

[She thinks back to the night when many members of the Sa Clan were arrested.] That sounds like what Lady Shunki was able to do back home. She once told me to cover my ears and my hands started moving on their own. And some guards fell over asleep because she told them to. It must be very useful for you.

[Oh, so powers similar to his existed in her world? Hmmm, that might be an important point to remember.]

It is, yes. In battle, I can use it to distract or divert my enemies, aside from bending them to my will.

I see. [She thought it did sound very useful and could possibly reduce the fighting that needed to be done.] How did you discover your ability? Were you able to do something like that back home?

No, but I am a prosecutor. [For Shuurei's benefit, he will add a short explanation. Well, short by his standards.] In court, it is my duty to convict the guilty, but that's not all. I seek the truth, and reveal it for the sake of justice.

My ability stems from the arguing and cross-examination I do on a regular basis, whether during an investigation or in the courtroom.

You're a judicial official, then? [Shuurei thought she understood most of what Edgeworth said but isn't sure about something...] Cross-examination? [She had never heard the phrase before.]

Sometimes I had to argue with the officials in the Imperial Court but I don't think it was the same as what you did.

Yes...and yes, I do have to argue with my fellow officials, as you put it. When a person is put on trial, the defense attorney attempts to prove innocence, while a prosecutor works toward a guilty verdict. Taken together, their arguments lead them to the truth.

And, cross-examination pertains to questioning witnesses and the defendant - that is, the suspect - himself. One searches for contradictions in a testimony, and draws out the needed information from it.

[nodding a bit as she takes in Edgeworth’s explanation] I think I follow. The judicial system in your country seems more complex than in Saiunkoku. It sounds like it could be beneficial though. [She wondered if such a system could be adopted back home…]

Do you simply start speaking to use your ability? [But there was probably more to it.]

Yes, and I find the power for it by reaching into my soul wavelength. I must work hard and focus to maintain my influence.

Your soul wavelength? [Shuurei looks uncertain. She knows that it's possible to see souls here somehow but she isn't really sure how any of the soul wavelength or resonance stuff works.] It involves great concentration then?

Correct. It is this energy that is channeled into a Weapon during resonance.

Then, does having a Weapon help you figure out your ability?

If your ability is closely tied to resonance, it is possible. But some abilities can be used even without the aid of a Weapon, such as mine.

I see. Maybe, I should try resonating with someone then. [She supposed she could ask Ryuuren... There were so many possibilities with her work experience that she still had no clear guesses about what her ability might be.] Thank you for answering my questions.
