[Though unpartnered, Mitsunari has experienced what it's like to resonate - Magoichi having been the most recent and successful. He turns his attention to the individual addressing him.]

I'm listening.

[identity profile] dead-black-eyes.livejournal.com 2011-11-17 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Not long ago, I attempted to resonate with someone similar to myself in a lot of ways. We're from the same world, and share a lot of the same tendencies.

[He's vague about it, not wanting to get into details or give away more than he has to about his connection to Mello and the Wammy's boys. Rather than explain just what happened, he tugs the collar of his shirt down, revealing several of about half a dozen medium-sized puncture wounds. They're healing well, but it still looks like a bear trap snapped closed on his chest.]

I want to avoid this sort of unfavorable outcome next time, but I've been wary about attempting resonation with anyone else for this reason. Is it generally fairly uncommon, to be injured after a failed resonation, or does this happen frequently to some Weapons?

[Mitsunari gives pause at the sight of the lesions along the man's torso, jaw locking in a grimace. During his time in Death City, he'd never seen something of this nature - and in his own experience resonating, the worst he'd faced was exhaustion from the ordeal. He steps a bit closer, a morbid curiousity wanting to reach out and touch the injuries across L's chest and examine them more thoroughly - but he knew better. He can see them well enough with his eyes.]

I've not been wielded by a like mind... I've never borne witness to something of this nature.

[identity profile] dead-black-eyes.livejournal.com 2011-11-18 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
[It's probably a good thing that Mitsunari doesn't reach out to touch him; L doesn't react well to people who do that sort of thing, especially unexpectedly, especially concerning something as inherently vulnerable as an injury.

He seems momentarily frustrated by the fellow Weapon's lack of an answer. Even confirming what he suspects would be helpful; that people who are too similar (in his case, the recklessness he shares with Mello) or different without being complementary, can resonate poorly and reach this type of result.]

A part of my Weapon form is a sort of steel trap, the kind with teeth and a trigger that snaps it shut. I'm sure that's where these came from, but why I'm here is so I can figure out a way to avoid it happening again. What should I look for in a Meister?

[Mitsunari can do little more than simply shake his head. He takes a step back and straightens out, bringing his eyes to meet L's own.]

As I have said... I've not experienced this sort of thing before. Whatever it is you have been doing, you had best avoid it - common sense that does not bear repeating, most certainly.

Perhaps your unfortunate circumstance- [His eyes travel down to the lesions once more, being reminded of the sores that covered the body of an old friend back home. It makes his grimace deepen.] Can be avoided by attempting resonance with someone less like you, if this is the result of a partnership gone awry.

[identity profile] dead-black-eyes.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[L returns the gaze unflinchingly with his oddly lightless eyes.]

That's essentially what I had deduced for myself. I want to find a partner, but I'm not particularly fond of getting maimed. The problem is that when it comes to people who aren't like me... just as it is with people who are too much like me... I don't get along terribly well with them. In fact, people in general are a bit difficult.

Then you should simply remain unpartnered, if you cannot will yourself to ally with others.

[It's blunt but that's what Mitsunari does best.]

[identity profile] dead-black-eyes.livejournal.com 2011-11-30 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
[At the end of the day, L appreciates blunt. It's so much better than useless rhetoric and "hedged", soft little nuances that protect one from negative emotions.]

I would, trust me... but I need someone to cook for me and make sure I sleep. It's always been like that.

[No sense being coy about the truth. He's an adult, and people assume that adults don't need caretakers unless it's made pretty clear. L's intelligence often obscures that clarity.]

[That statement alone gives Mitsunari pause, finding himself staring at L now. It's strange how such an odd statement could bring a flood of memories back to Mitsunari - memories of home, of Gyobu.]

...You too require someone to remind you of meals? To encourage your rest?

[Mitsunari was a dangerous man. He was seen as a relentless beast in battle and he had learned strategy from one of the greatest minds his world had possessed. Yet like L, he required someone to remind him to take his meals, to wash up, to do so much as rest properly.]

[identity profile] dead-black-eyes.livejournal.com 2011-12-05 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[The topic of L's old lifestyle had come up several times since his arrival in Death City. He'd fabricated something consistent with his other lies, and like most good lies, there were grains of truth embedded. For instance, while Watari wasn't his "uncle", or even related by blood, he had fed L, clothed him, and given him assurance of a roof over his head since L was eight. Few adult caretakers enjoyed the unique benefits that came with handling L; Watari had, in exchange for serving as a liaison and lifting the burden of life's tedious, necessary tasks from L's skinny shoulders, shared in the glory that was L. He had had a part in the legacy of the century's greatest detective.

In Death City, though, "L" was nothing more than the twelfth letter of the alphabet to all but a select few young men from L's own world. The news that he was used to a caretaker, therefore, was usually greeted with incredulity (what's wrong with you? You don't seem retarded) or pity (I'm so sorry, it must be so difficult...), all depending on the person and what they were used to seeing. Several had assumed that he was an idiot savant, which actually wasn't so far from the truth. But up until this point, no one had responded in kind, and admitted that they too required a certain amount of indulgence from those around them.

Mitsunari, though... he isn't like L, not a gaunt, shabby thing who looks like he can't take care of himself. L decides that it very likely isn't to the same degree, but... still. He should acknowledge the willingness to be vulnerable in front of a stranger, and reward it with understanding. Even if just that is one of the things L is more "idiot" at than "savant."]

I suppose... is that true for you? How did you find someone here to take care of it for you? I am sure you understand the unique difficulty that comes with securing such assistance...

[personal profile] reverencing 2011-12-08 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[Mitsunari can only shake his head at L's question, feeling a certain tightness rise up in his chest for a moment. A reminder that Yoshitsugu is not with him in this world leaves him with a certain sting, having had the leper by his side for the majority of his life. Though the man was afflicted with a horrific illness, he still was the only one Mitsunari had left that he could trust. Yoshitsugu kept him on his schedule, reminded him to eat, to bathe, watched over him as he slept - to find someone like that here in Death City would be nice but in Mitsunari's mind, an impossibility.]

I have not located such a thing here. [Though one could argue that Magoichi was temporarily fitting that role. That was likely one of the reasons he'd managed to avoid starving to death.] There is no one who has proven themselves worthy of the task.

[Or rather, worthy of his trust.]

[identity profile] dead-black-eyes.livejournal.com 2011-12-08 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[L is notoriously bad with human emotion. He peers more closely at Mitsunari, seeming to be searching for something he knows full well he isn't going to find.

Ironically, if there's any feeling L is capable of sympathizing with, it's probably not being able to fully trust anyone else.]

You seem to be doing all right... I mean, I think you're upset...

[He says it like he isn't really sure.]

...but you don't seem to be starving, or exhausted, or ill.

[personal profile] reverencing 2011-12-09 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I am not entirely useless.

[By which he means that he's had someone to remind him. Though not what he would consider his caretaker, Magoichi had taken up the task of at least reminding him when to eat at morning training - and the other world's Hideyoshi served as a reminder of when to rest. Though he would still skip meals and rarely got a full night's sleep, there was at least someone looking out for him, even if he wouldn't admit that his condition was their doing.]

[identity profile] dead-black-eyes.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I never meant to imply that. And I never thought it...

[But now it seems like people who can't take care of themselves, people that L has actually professed to be exactly like, are useless, at least in this man's opinion. He bites his lip, seeming hungry, tired, and peaked, even if he hadn't quite reached the physical extremes that came with severe neglect yet.]
