The clinic is a buzz of activity from beginning to end, with the doctors and their staff preparing everything that could be needed by their agents in Europe, and clearing away the unnecessaries. Food is cooked large-scale because no one will have time to do it later, and hospital supplies are moved around to make more space for beds.
Shibusen's scouts and supportive agents are in charge of dragging the wounded back to Death City, and they come and go for random errands. The atmosphere is understandably tense, and things don't get better when the first of the injured are brought in.

Yuppers
Her heart started racing. Her breath caught in her throat as she flinched. Sapphire eyes met his firmly. "No--" Her voice snapped--head lowered.
"There..is nothing right about war no matter what decisions we make. " Her hands shook under her body. She could not forget the faces.
"But I couldn't not do something even if it's one life or hundreds. Because watching..that's even more wrong--right?" Her voice was muted; as she looked up at him; face bandaged--lip split --purple bruised--and braved a smile.
"But it's worth it.." She nodded, swallowing--a shaky laugh escaping. "But that doesn't.. Can't make it right."

"Standing by and doing nothing--that would be wrong. I'm not saying that war is right, but... this would be a massacre of innocent lives if people like us weren't willing to step in."
His voice gains a little bit of momentum, backed by a determination grounded in an unshakable confidence. "BREW brought us here for a reason. If we don't stand up to protect the world, who will? If we don't save the world, there's no guarantee that it will be saved."
And, in case she has forgotten, Takuto is here to save the world.

"Just..protect the people you can--" She swallowed, closing her eyes. "..Even--if we wish we could save all of them."
this is getting pretty serious. O.O
"Kaoru, do you think it's okay if you'd rather save your friends than other people?"
He's never exactly considered the dilemma in these terms, but now that the question was out there, he felt like he needed an answer.
eep
"But--those people become important--from starting out as other people. " She said softly, thinking of the little girl in the trashcan, terrified of the monster eating her father--a trigger too deep to put into words, as her hands trembled, sitting hard on top of them.

Which was why he is determined to prioritize the lives of his weapons. But... he would also prioritize Kaoru, or really any other Shibusen agent. But there is definitely a hierarchy.
He saw her hands tremble, and he gently placed one of his on top of hers. "Kaoru, you can't dwell on the details." He gets the feeling a part of her is still trapped in Europe, still seeing the Kishin eggs and the horror they brought. It had been the same for him for a few days after his first mission against them. He had struggled with reasons for fighting in the war, for holding a weapon against a creature that had once been human....
And he had decided to move forward. What other choice did he have? He was unable to stand idly by, so he had chosen to embrace his part in the war effort. Besides, he had been raised to protect the weak and he wasn't going to back away from that responsibility.

"My Father died in the Seinan War. A year ago. --" She said stiffly. "I understand why he did it--just as I'm doing now, that was what he wanted to do with his life--to protect people--without any sort of preference--and yet----" She swallowed, shaking her head as she closed her eyes tightly.
"Baka..you're from the future. You haven't had a serious war in your lifetime--the feelings..are very different for us--" She gripped his hand tightly in hers, shaking a little.
"...But I agree. We can't--stop now. We can't--" She leaned her head back against the wall, closing her eyes.

Which was quite different from his own situation with his father. But... he squeezed her hand back.
"My grandfather was alive during World War II. You wouldn't know about it, of course, but no one... no one wants to be in a war again after that. He never talks about it, but it makes me glad I didn't grow up during a war like that." His war had been tinted with something much more personal, and had mostly been averted. The few battles he had fought had thankfully had no casualties, though several had been very close.
"Still... it's not as if I've never had to fight for my life before, or fight to protect people. I've... always known, I think, that I would have to." It had become especially clear after receiving the Tau mark.
"We have a responsibility, Kaoru, to protect those who can't protect themselves." He takes a deep breath. "That's why I'm going to keep fighting until the war is won."

Somehow it..had given her strength. The same strength she felt when she thought about Kenshin--thought about being strong enough to keep herself from getting hurt.
"..Takuto." Her voice was soft, her head against the wall as she stared up at the fluorescent lights. She hadn't realized how exhausted she was.
"...Everything you're saying is right. Is what I'd expect from someone I'm teaching. But right now--I just--"
A tear slid down her bruised cheek.
"I want to keep the feelings I felt today in my heart." She closed her eyes.

He puts an arm around her gently, and then carefully brushes away her tear with his other hand.
"They're... good feelings, right?"
no subject
She stares down at her hands, her brows furrowed. "...I want to think they are. I think they will be---someday." Kaoru hoped that little girl would grow up strong, blanketed by the love of people she'd have to search for just as she herself had to have done--or maybe they'd just happen along like Kenshin and the others had--and all she'd have to do was open the door.
Either way, the triggers were deep for Kaoru today, and all she could do was wordlessly shake her head, a hand over her eyes.

BUt at least she's still speaking positively. As long as someday, she knows she'll be better, he knows she will be. He just nods, putting his hand on the top of her head.
"They will be."
He really wants to know what happened to her, but he's not sure he wants to ask. She doesn't seem ready to talk about it.

Her head feels dizzy mostly because she's lost some blood but all in all she's just tired. Bone-tired and sick inside and her Father was right even though they still went to war.
Kamiya Kasshin Ryu..is meant to be used only in the era of peace--..you knew that too, didn't you..

Normally he doesn't like to squeeze answers from people, but he honestly believes that Kaoru will need to talk about it. And he believes he should hear it, given how much time they spend together and because he's her student. He can't help but think that something in her teaching style might change due to her experience on her first mission, so in that light, it's almost imperative that he find out before too long.
Also, she's his friend. He's leaned on her in the past, so he'd like her to be able to lean on him. Metaphorically, because she was managing that quite well literally.

s-so cute.....
Still, the bustle in the clinic has died down, and Takuto is exhausted--not emotionally like Kaoru, but definitely physically. She's comfortable to lean against, and he hardly even realizes when his eyelids start feeling heavier and he gradually, gently... starts to fall asleep.....
