[OPEN] In Black & White
Characters: Butlers Ramza, Kanji, Naoto and YOU!
Location: Bloody Butler Cafe
Rating: Varies. This will mostly be completely silly.
Time: June 19th, All Day
Description: New faces among the butlers!? Seems like one or two of them owes a couple of favors. Take a break from your Gala preparations and grab some lunch or coffee, and a little company...
Nestled away in Death City were partner cafes, one Maid and one Butler not far from each other. With BREW inviting and dismissing, the staff frequently changed, disappointing and yet enticing the clientele who missed their favorites but looked forward to new faces and an all new favorite.
The decor was what you could expect from the Bloody Butler, modestly lit and appearing for all the world like a dining room in a fancy mansion, tables and comfortable chairs set up for singles or groups to come together and enjoy a little break from the day. The paintings on the walls were various plays on the glamorous life, but if you looked closely some of them looked like the late Shinigami had placed himself in famous works of art, like the Mona Lisa with a skull mask among other whimsical works.
But among the paintings, fresh and fragrant flowers in vases lining the walls and in centerpieces at each table, glittering chandeliers and the light and lofty mood-setting music playing over the speakers were well-dressed individuals moving along from table to table, stopping to chat. Most sat with the visitors in rapt attention, chatting away. The menu fare comprised of light and sensible meals, or more specifically things that can be picked up with a fork or spoon by the butlers and fed to you if you request it, and rich, sinful desserts that can be treated just the same.
It all begins with a warm greeting the moment each customer steps in, for it's customary to treat each visitor like royalty.
[ooc: Don't forget to tag yourself in! This is also open for Sugata, who just found work at the Bloody Butler alongside Ramza, to make a thread as well if they'd like. Butlers will each make an thread for themselves, and will attend to each visitor who tags into their thread or comes in to poke fun at their well-dressed friend. Can't pick? Well, you can stop in for lunch now and dinner later. Nobody'll bat an eyelash for your sudden interest~]

But she soon found herself walking past the Bloody Butler Cafe. Huh? Wasn't that the place Kanji had mentioned but seemed reluctant to talk about. It had been a long day... Maybe, she should just eat out tonight and see what the fuss was about.
Lily walked in, looking around curiously. Looked like a ritzy place. Then, her eyes landed on someone very familiar and wearing, of all things, a butler costume? She couldn't help tilting her head and staring.
"Kanji?! What in tarnation are you doing here?"
no subject
But when he heard his name and turned, he decided to pour it on. He'd give these last couple of hours his ALL!
"Evening! Welcome to the Bloody Butler!" A fist pounded into a palm, but that fire in his eyes quickly faltered, and his hands fell to his sides.
Aw crap, it's his boss.
"L-lily!?" He'd dodged that subject for a reason! Of all the days for her to be curious...! Crap, play it cool, play it cool...!
"Uhhh... you here f-for dinner...?"
no subject
"You're moonlighting as a waiter? But I thought you worked at the bakery..." Well, when he wasn't out on a mission or doing repairs for the shop. Or that's what she remembered him telling her anyway. He seemed like a bit of a workaholic to her. "Is this why you weren't available today?" ...Oh. Was he worried she'd fire him for not being at the shop the day before the gala?
no subject
"Kept dodgin' it, but they finally got clever n' grabbed me." He sighed, but still gestured to a table.
"I'll setcha up with dinner. Table here's cleared n' ready to go. But I, uh... I-I gotta be in-character for the whole gig. You ready?!"
no subject
"But what do you mean by 'in-character'? Is this some kind of dinner theater thing?" She was still a bit uncertain as she sat down at the table indicated, taking a moment to smooth out her skirts which had a crinoline underneath.
no subject
"Uh... s-sort of. S'more that the butlers keep their customers company and we treat 'em like-- l-lemme just show ya." He cleared his throat, fetched a menu and placed it before her. He hiked a foot onto the bench and was all slouch and nothing-but-trouble.
"...You're a new face around here. I'm Kanji, your butler for the evening. There somethin' I can get goin' for ya- coffee, tea, or d'you feel like divin' right in?"
no subject
"Um, tea." It was probably a bit late for coffee.
"...But are you sure that's how a butler acts?" It seemed more appropriate for a juvenile delinquent than a butler.
no subject
But Kanji straightened up and headed off to get that tea, giving a table full of customers a look that had the three girls there grab on to each other and giggle, not scared of him at all, yet they seemed to huddle together to excitedly whisper about... something, pointing toward the shorter, blue-haired butler that Lily may undoubtedly recognize.
He came back with a silver tray of fresh tea, a warmed cup and saucer, sugar cubes and a pitcher of cream. Once the tray was set, he began pouring the tea.
"Cream or sugar..." He hesitated, looked away-
"...Lily-hime?" Awkward. He really hoped she didn't know Japanese and didn't ask what it meant.
no subject
As he walked away to get the requested tea, her eyes followed after him and she noticed the giggling girls and their pointing. Was that Naoto? Why the heck was she also wearing a butler costume?
"Sugar, please," she said when Kanji returned and poured the tea. There's something else she doesn't understand though...
"Lily-hime? What does that mean?" Some folks like Raidou tended to call her Ivory-san but that wasn't one she'd heard before. (If she knew, she might have found it just as awkward!) She glanced over towards the blue-haired butler. "And is that Naoto? Why's she here, too?"
no subject
"'Hime'... i-it's a title ya give to royalty, like a princess! W-we're s'posed to do that here," he stammered, not looking at her.
"Naoto insisted on helping out. ...'cause of her, the manager cut the favor to one work shift instead'a two. She seems to be hittin' it off."
no subject
"Oh, I see. Does this place have that much trouble finding help?" Then, more quietly, kind of thinking out loud, "Maybe, I should look into hiring someone else at the shop, too."
no subject
"It gets real busy on some days, but they could use an extra body or two, yeah." But he nodded.
"--Oh, yeah, speakin' of: I put in a notice at the bake shop a little bit ago. Cuttin' myself loose. Between two jobs, missions and tryin' to work up SEES again, I was gettin' like no free time. Last day's after the Gala. I can pour more time into the tailoring and still be able to cool my heels... I mean, we're close to our witch assignment, y'know? Can't be dead tired on the big day."
no subject
"Oh, I didn't know you were quitting the bakery job. I could use more help at the shop if you wanted to work more days."
But she blinked in confusion at that last part.
"...Um, witch assignment?" Lily still didn't know that the last soul required for a Deathscythe wasn't just another kishin egg...
no subject
He nodded. "Yeah. Deathscythes take 99 kishin egg souls and 1 witch soul for the hundredth in that order. I asked one'a the instructors why, and the last soul's to keep a Weapon's stability n' control or somethin', but it also takes the magic and puts it to good use against the Kishin, instead of to destroying everything like the witch was in the first place."
Kanji scratched his head. "I feel like I'm ready for the test, but Naoto n' I are lookin' for a specific witch. The things she'd done... we can't let it go!"
no subject
But unfortunately as he continued on to the topic of the witch, she might have paled and then choked on her tea. Her arm shook and some of the tea sloshed over the side of the cup into the saucer as she coughed, trying to clear her throat. She quickly set it down before the rest spilled, still coughing.
no subject
"Sh-shit, you okay?? Kinda just goes down the wrong tube sometimes, h-heheh--" He lowered his head to hide a bit from the stares, and went to pour a glass of water from the pitcher already set up on the table.
"S-sorry, here!"
no subject
When she spoke again, her voice was a bit shaky and she looked at him with a trace of horror.
"...You don't mean to actually hunt, to kill, a witch, do you?"
She knew what it was to be shunned, to be attacked for being a witch and hearing this from him made her feel as if he'd doused her with the pitcher of ice water on the table.
no subject
His eyebrows furrowed. "Shit, Lily... you a'right?"
That didn't make sense. She'd gone on missions and she was around when the witches attacked the city and during the evacuations. To be horrified that the witches were on Shinigami's wanted list just as much as kishin eggs were, it didn't click to him. Anyone else would wonder if she, too, was a witch...
"Shoulda never brought it up. Crap, I can change the subject to somethin'- somethin' else...!"
no subject
"Kanji... You can't seriously mean to kill some woman for being born a witch, something she had no choice about. Even if she committed a crime, that shouldn't be the answer."
no subject
Kanji rubbed the back of his head. "The Shinigami's the God of Death, but he wants the world safe. He even changed his appearance so he wouldn't scare nobody. When he puts names on his Wanted list, puts missions up on the board, it ain't just for shits n' giggles, or because they're Witches. These are people who hunt humans for their souls, spread the Madness flowing all around the world. These're people who ain't turnin' back, and people ya can't just walk up to n' tell 'em to stop what they do."
He paused. She was his boss... so maybe he could confess to something. "These ain't just people who you can turn in to the cops, neither. I sat in a cage in the Grand Canyon and couldn't do shit but watch n' listen as the Witches there fed the prisoners trapped with me to the kishin eggs they made, wanted to make stronger for whatever the next step in their plan is."
His jaw tightened. "You can't be reasonable with 'em! Not with this world's version of Witches. They're messed up here!"
no subject
She sighed heavily as she looked at him. Perhaps, it was a good thing that witches couldn't cry.
"...Even if you're angry about what they did to you, you can't really mean that. Not just a witch but killing anyone... How is that any better than what you claim these witches do? Kanji, believe me, you don't want to do it."
She still thought back to that hot summer day in Jarod with regret sometimes...
no subject
"But I didn't wanna get thrown into this world, neither, or fight in a goddamned war. If peace talks worked, the war woulda been over hundreds of years ago. If I don't do what I'm doin'... people will die. The world's gonna drown in this Madness shit."
His jaw clenched again, and he looked at the table. "Two of my best friends died here because of all this, damn it! I can't lose anybody else... not if I can train up with Naoto and fight back, make her a Deathscythe. I fight for them... and I fight for everybody else. If I don't, then I'll have to bury someone else, and I just can't go through it again!"
no subject
"Two of your friends died? You mean from home?" She took a deep breath and tried to think of what to say. "I'm sorry, Kanji. I understand wanting to protect people. But..." It was terrible that he had lost friends but she still felt like she should dissuade him from this idea of killing a witch.
She sighed. "Maybe, we should talk somewhere else..."
The stares were becoming uncomfortable and even a little hostile as people whispered to their companions about that witch sympathizer the delinquent butler was yelling at.
no subject
But... little did she know, too. She wasn't there to see Yosuke's body in the morgue, or picking his bones from the ashes. While he wasn't there when little Nanako-chan died, her soul eaten, her grave was still there in the yard. Then there was Dojima, who'd died -twice- here. If he were to be honest, he'd lost four people from home, but he wasn't about to give a sob story.
"...Forget it," he conceded, looking away.
"Y'wanna talk about it, we can talk at the shop or somethin'. Not here. I gotta finish up this shift. I didn't mean ta yell."
no subject
She nodded as he dropped the subject. But the situation had become too awkward with all the staring customers. She doubted she could have gotten through dinner now without choking on something else and opened her purse, rummaging through it.
"I think I'd better leave." Tossing a ten dollar bill on the table, she stood up.
