Neji didn't really feel like protection, being a simple Weapon with no real defensive abilities and leaving much of his Meister's body exposed. Like there was a fine line between deciding to trust Lee's judgement or protect him with his body.

But he focused on their surroundings, senses on high alert as they stepped where the first victim had fallen. Every movement, rustle, and snapped twig was suspect in such a place.
