I Like to Travel Lightly, Leave the Weight Behind [June 23]

Characters: L Lawliet and Light Yagami
Location: Their condo apartment
Rating: PG-13
Time: Backdated to June 23 after his talk with Bakura
Description: L thinks he's put all his affairs in order and is prepared to face anything. He's been wrong before.

It had gone easier than L had expected. He had told Bakura that it was time to own up to his selfishness, that he wouldn't be around forever and the younger man needed to make new friends, and that they would still be friends, they just couldn't talk, or see each other, or associate at all. They would pretend, and eventually Bakura wouldn't even know when it was such good pretending that it wasn't that anymore, at all.

It was less hassle than breaking a tender heart. Such a gentle letdown that it hadn't felt like one in the least ("friend" was such a powerful word), and wouldn't, L thought, for a relatively long time. As he felt his way along the wall and up the stairs, counting steps, he thought he felt a touch lightheaded, but maybe it was the unfamiliar sensation of having a clear conscience. He'd cut a long-suffering thrall free, and perhaps it meant a strange kind of freedom for the detective, too.

It was exhilarating, like hearing the cracks and splits of ice beneath his feet, the brittle webs spreading before the plunge and the chill.

He shivered as he unlocked his apartment door, the scrabble of excited, clawed feet rushing toward him, and he made the controlled, deliberate decision to stop feeling fear. He wouldn't need it again.
