Well, it always depends on your intention. The easy method is just to swing it around and hope it drives away your attacker. But that will easily open you to attacks if your opponent is skilled. It's much better to know how to strike so you aren't just hitting willy-nilly.

Now, no matter how you hold the staff, remember to aim for the lower torso. The solar plexus offers the easiest target to cripple an opponent. And, when you aren't attacking, keep the staff straight in front of you and at the level of your eyes so you can easily parry attacks.
