Description: Welcome to Death City!

The city was in good shape today, despite the recent attack to it and the unfortunate earthquake a month back. The damages to the city had been repaired best as they could, and everything else was covered in a healthy heap of decor for the upcoming Valentine’s Day.

Things were a bit somber, as was expected after so many of the residents lost their loved ones. Fortunately, if there was something Death City was good at, it was getting back on its feet after a fall.

"Hrmp. Classification doesn't matter, I am what I am and I will stay that way, no matter what anyone does!" Stan huffed, arms crossing. He always had lived by his own will and he was going to keep doing so!

Of course, it was a machine. Intelligent, but probably not as intelligent as R.I.N.G.

"It didn't understand. Why would it? It's a machine, it has no concept of war. But troop numbers. They're strength compared to your strength. Those are things it can calculate." He nods. "It makes sense. Now... back to this being another universe. The video said this is Nevada. But Nevada is in my world. I used to live there."

[ okay, so he really wasn't expecting that.

[ The face behind those glasses is one of pure, unadultered perplexion. What the shit, man. ]

Where'd you get that name?

[ A bit late for caution, but hey. ]

A human mentioned it in conversation. He wanted to know if you and I share the same sign.

[ but gosh. so many feels. the Signless sort of wants to take this guy and hug him. ask him if he and Karkat are close friends, like Psii and he are. ]

Though, I must admit. The similarities are striking.

She liked to think she knew Neji well after not only living with him for her entire life, but also after having a somewhat close friendship to him in the past few years. So she liked to think she knew all his not-quite-an-answer-answers enough to spot them and figure out why. But this...

She knew he wasn't lying, but he also didn't answer. And how easily and almost quickly he moved to the side. She may not be a genius, but she wasn't stupid either. Something was wrong, but she didn't quite know what. Her smile fell, and she opened her mouth to say something about it, but nothing came out. This wasn't the place for such conversations.

"I have been... Yes," she said instead. What she really wanted to say was that he didn't have to lie to her, not anymore. "I...I heard Hanabi is here as well, so... So it's not so unfortunate being here, being able to fight with you both."

[ "Human", "he". Someone who knows his name and sign. ]

Congrats, you pass that test.

[ Despite himself, shoulders hunch up a little, defensive and habitual, the unconscious little gesture like the rigid line of his back could guard against whatever judgment this guy may or may not have. ]

[ Goad him on, go on. For all this guy's spilling, he can only be one thing; another troll. ]

"Neji and Hanabi both, and they are both doing well here. They are living together near me and I see them often. Though they could both stand to make more friends!" None of the Hyuuga were all that social, but his impression was that at least Hinata wasn't stand-off-ish, and was even very friendly. Maybe she'd be a good impression on her relatives.

"Their stay has not always been the easiest. They are both recovering from a recent attack on the city. But they are nearly done recovering and there is nothing to worry about! And here!" He pulls out his communicator and quickly shows her how to access the maps. "You will learn more about the city later today, on a tour, but we are here," he pointed and then scrolled, "and they live here."

Lowering his camera, Kolchak looks at the girl who spoke.

"It's proof. Documentation," he explained, gesturing as he spoke. "No one in my world will believe that I've visited another one unless I bring back evidence."

Calm yourself. To be able to meet our descendents here is nothing short of joyous. Not everyone can boast of such a thing.

[ he chuckles, being braver with this one than the rest. perhaps it's the broken arm, but the Signless doubts it. when he ruffles Sollux's hair, it's only affectionate. only because this one is a strong psionic as well. ]

That being said, you remind me of your ancestor, a very close friend of mine. Who I happen to miss terribly at the moment.

[ A perigree ago, Sollux may have flinched away from the merest hint of physical contact. He almost does so now, shoulders jerking just so at the touch, but it's that same curiosity that keeps him there, listening with near rapt attention. ]

... You knew him? I mean, know?

[ Now this was something new. How many fucks meet such fabled myths like ancestors? Once in a lifetime deal, at best. ]

Wait, does that mean-- Are you...?

[ Come on he ought to know this the answer was right on the tip of his tongue it was just like those stupid trivia games where the solution never cropped up until after the answer was already given oh good goddamn. ]

Perhaps on a better day he might not have had to see that suspicion, have been able to cover for the inconsistencies better, but fooling the eyes of any Hyuuga was a trying task for anyone. Something in his eyes flickered at the mention of Hanabi, brows creasing ever so slightly even as the corners of his mouth lifted.

"Yes, Hanabi-san is here as well. She's living with myself and my Weapon Lain at the moment. Speaking of such matters, Hinata-sama, have you learned the nature of your soul yet? It's an important matter, but there is no pressing need to do so now if you would rather retire for the day."

[ this time it's the Signless that blinks. Sollux cannot tell? that's certainly a little fishy. the older troll ignores the other questions in favor of leaping onto that. ]

I thought it would be fairly obvious which of you I would be the ancestor of. The resemblance is rather striking.

[ because they have the same horns, mostly. nubby and small. well, small as far as troll horns are supposed to be. ]

"Mmm-hmm. I see." He nodded, looking out at the street. "But the roads are cobbled, not paved. Better for horses than for cars. And the buildings would be considered old-fashioned in my world. It's like this whole city was pulled out of... of 19th century Europe!"

Clare had a lopsided smile as Hinata was now taking over her role as being the awkward one. This seemed to be happening to her a lot. Well, it was a question, and it was one she could easily answer. "It isn't as big as it appears, the way the city is designed makes it look very intimidating, but it isn't too large by the standards of cities here."

"However we're on the wrong side of Shinbusen to see the more important day to day locations. Like the New Arrival housing and the training fields. So the walks for day to day things aren't really bad, except Watch HQ, over there," Clare's finger cut through the air as she pointed out a building way down the long staircase up to Shinbusen. "That's only important after you find a partner and want to volunteer." Clare was scanning the horizon looking for the various other buildings of note. Like the Basketball Court, the Clinic, anything to draw things out. But...

"I knew your family name was Hyuuga before you told me," Clare sighed, but didn't look at her. It was opening a door Clare wasn't sure she wanted to open exactly, yet... it's the right thing to do, "Ninjas having stylistic metal headbands, that and your eyes. Hence the staring, thanks for not, you know, mentioning it." She smiled again, finally turning to Hinata.

It was nice to meet another ninja who wasn't quite so... serious. Obito she put it on his age more than anything, but the others were all so confident and intimidating. It was nice one of them was like her. Really obviously bad at small talk.

She had to laugh when he said they could both use more friends. That was far too true, though she was certain neither would agree. It was something she secretly wished for both Neji and Hanabi, that one day they would have many friends their own age.

She followed everything he did with his communicator on her own, putting the location of where they lived into her memory. It was now going to be one of her first stops once she figured out other things about this place.

"Thank you very much...for all of this. I-I really appreciate it." And she honestly did. She had only expected a few, less important questions to be answered, but to find out what she had... She was very grateful. Even the news that they were recovering was welcome, and something she would deal with with them.

"Does this map show everything about this city?"

Now that she had an idea that something was wrong with Neji, she focused even more on him. Nothing was overlooked. Now, more than ever, she was grateful Gai had shown her where Neji and Hanabi lived. Their home would be better for such conversations.

But even then...Lain? She hadn't really heard of this person before now. "You are a Meister, then?" Somehow she wasn't too surprised and even happy for him.

"Um, I have. It...um, well, the machine said I was a Weapon."

Hinata blushed and looked away herself. To know Clare had been onto her knowing that she knew Clare had been staring was embarrassing. And it made her wonder if they could have avoided some of that by just being honest about their own curiosity about each other.

"You must know quite a few of the ninja from my home to know that. An-and Neji and Hanabi as well... To know about Hyuuga." At the same time, Hinata took it as a good sign that she admitted to knowing that. It made her seem somewhat...harmless. In that she wouldn't be attacking her for her eyes or some other crazy thing.

"Who else have you met? That is, if you don't mind me asking?" She finally turned back to face Clare and smiled, though there was still a hint of a blush on her cheeks. "And thank you...for pointing out those points of interest. I'm sure I'll need to know them soon enough."

The scrutiny made his shoulders tense, eyes avoidant as he looked over the crowd, idly wondering who it was that had looked at her soul. Unimportant information really, but something to occupy himself with.

"Yes," he answered, finding that she was a Weapon vaguely disconcerting for reasons he couldn't immediately pinpoint. Unlike Lee though, he didn't really want to know if he could resonate with her, was almost afraid to try.

"Hanabi-san is a Meister as well, though she has yet to find a partner. I will let her know that you have arrived; I'm certain she'll be very happy to see you. Unfortunately, I have been assigned here for the time being, else I would be more than willing to escort you around the city."

Liar.

[As soon as Hijikata caught a glimpse of her face, he knew he had to get away from the area as far as possible. He thought present-day Takasugi was bad--ok, that's pretty bad, but no this was a million times worse.

It was just pretty much impossible to think straight at this point. Every time he tried to rationally think about the situation, his brain decided to take a vacation and think about other things. Like:

She shouldn't be here.

She's gone.

Why couldn't she even rest in peace?

And most frequently,

How the hell was he suppose to face her like this?

So the obvious answer was that he wasn't going to. In fact, he already discarded his communicator (so that no one would be able to contact him through that thing) and was walking away as fast as he could. It was funny though.

Despite not even taking a single puff of smoke from his cigarette, he still had difficulty breathing.]

Clare was feeling a wall of guilt on her shoulders, some from being honest, and some from the things she couldn't be honest about. Clare's always been honest whenever she could, it was suffocating to have to hide things.

"In passing," Clare wasn't exactly friends with most of the ninja. But they were all over training, plus several lived close to each other. The few she'd seen recently was when she was crazy. But she didn't really have the right mindset to talk to them. "Hanabi, Neji, Tenten, Gai, and Obito I've spoken to. Your family members are the ones I've had the most contact with."

Clare instantly regretted her choice of phrase, mind whirling back to a week ago, and her bout of madness. "I am here to help. Anything you want to know just ask me." Clare paused her neck itchy from the lie in those nice words, "Just... I haven't seen Neji or Hanabi in a week. I've been busy so I can't tell you how they are, okay? Sorry."

Clare's apology was twofold, for both not being able to answer for those very truthful reasons. And because Clare didn't want to out her own issues with Neji, or sell out Hanabi's nap on an ink painting. The former being too embarrassing, and the latter being family business, not Clare's place. More lies, more deception... what next.

Oh, another person who knew the geography of this world. Gai liked it when the person he greeted knew Nevada; it prevented him from having to explain countries and states that he'd only known for a couple of months.

"There are a few worlds that have Nevadas! Several, actually! Mine did not. Some worlds have things that are similar, though. Parallel! This is still Nevada, but it is a different Nevada then you know. Here there are mirrors that we talk through, and we have abilities that are not like home, and they use a currency called Death Dollars, and there are many other strange things.

Hinata was, perhaps, just a tiny bit more perceptive when it came to others than her cousin and sister. Especially when it was emotions she could relate to, like guilt.

Yet she doesn't quite say anything. They were strangers, really, despite having mutual friends. But even so, Clare was nice and forthcoming about most things.

She smiled a little bit wider and shook her head. "It's all right... I've already been told they are well, and...and I hope to see them soon enough. So you don't have to apologize. You've already been very helpful."

Then her smile fell a little bit and she worried her bottom lip as she thought about what she wanted to say. "Thank you...for being on friendly terms with them. I-I know Neji and Hanabi can be a handful at times."

"You're--" '--lying', she almost blurted out, but stopped herself. Hinata thought they had progressed past this stage a couple of years ago, that he had finally been able to look her in the eyes at least. Gai had said that he was all right, that he was just recovering from some attack. So to find him this stand-offish was a shock, something she hadn't been prepared for.

And it hurt in so many ways.

She looked away herself, focusing on some mundane spot on the wall or even someone else. Mainly, she didn't want him to see just how hurt she was by these simple things and words. If he didn't want to see her today, then she wouldn't press it. Tomorrow was another day, and everyone here didn't need to be privy to their issues--whatever they were.

"I understand... It's important to stick to you duty. And...I'll be happy to see her, too. I am happy to see you as well, Neji-niisan."

Clare didn't look much better, consoling words don't work so well when the listener still feels like she's betraying someone. Sure, they were strangers, but Clare didn't like hurting people, even if the truth would be worse than the empty words.

Especially words including 'friendly terms.' She did consider both Hyuuga's friends, but her actions weren't friendly with Neji, they were selfish and hurtful. Her choices did no good for him, her choices might have directly lead to his... no, don't think about that.

Clare whipped out her Mirror and quickly sped her fingers over the device's face. A girl all too capable with a touch screen interface it was second nature to do all that was needed. A short second after she finished a message should be on Hinata's mirror, filtered to just her and containing Neji, Hanabi, and Lain's address. As well as instructions on how to use the GPS and map functions to navigate there without, "I can be a little bit more helpful."

Clare's smile was honest but... that guilt was still there, just below the surface. "I'm sure they'll both be happy to see you, even if it being here isn't ideal."

The laugh was encouraging. Gai knew she was more lighthearted than the others, but that was a good sign. He needed to take the time she was here to get to know her better, he decided.

"You are very welcome, Hinata. I am in this room to help out, and you are also a villagemate and an ally. All of the help I can give is yours!" Gai nodded. "If you zoom in, like this," he demonstrates, "it shows you what each building is. And there is a way to search, here, for what you are looking for! It is not always perfect but it is useful!"
