[Near has to hold back a sigh of annoyance when he realizes Mello’s about to head into the area with the strongest levels of madness, and without wielding him, no less. Of course he would be stupid and do something reckless just to prove he could. Of course he would do it without wielding his Weapon, thus making it even harder to resist the madness wavelength on his own, given how resonance is supposed to act like an anchor. Near could have said something to try to stop him, but he knows it wouldn’t work, so he doesn’t waste his time; he does, however, follow Mello into the designated area, albeit rather gingerly.

Having grown accustomed to the madness wavelength ever since his arrival to Death City, he is expecting this experience to follow along the lines of his previous encounters with madness: a bumpy ride, certainly, but not overpowering enough to strip him of logic and the ability to detect what is real and what isn’t. However, there are certain factors at play that Near hasn’t-- surprisingly-- considered: the lack of absolute emotional neutrality (which has been rattled since the events of the 14th and 15th, even though he has been trying very hard to ignore that), and how the lack of (proper) sleep has exhausted him even more than usual.

He fully expects the extreme discomfort the madness brings, and the way it tries to dominate him, but he doesn’t expect it to overwhelm him like it does: like it used to do months ago. He stops in his tracks, gripped by an all too familiar and crippling fear as he hears the rush of water getting closer, and he takes a deep breath to brace himself for impact, like someone about to dive into water.

He realizes Mello is speaking, but he can barely make out his words, as if he is hearing them underwater.]
