[Open] Taking over the High Scores

Characters: Bakura Ryou & anyone else near, in, or around the arcade
Location: The arcade
Rating: ...N for nerdy?
Time: Feb 17th, afternoon & evening
Description: Uncomfortably familiar weird stuff is starting happen around Bakura in addition to the drama across the hall, so he's avoiding dealing with it by sinking far too many quarters into machines at the arcade.

It had started when he noted that something he had left in the fridge to have for the next day had been missing. He didn't pay it much mind and had just assumed that he had absentmindedly eaten it the night before. But it seemed like it kept happening... And things he was sure he had put away properly were winding up in other places entirely.

Like they had back in Tokyo.

But he wasn't losing any time this time. Sure, he still would lose track of time when he was playing his games, but realizing that it was suddenly 2am and he had finished the game was different than realizing that it was 5pm and he couldn't remember where he'd spent the last 2 hours. Or why he was in a different part of town than he'd started.

Rather than think on it, after finding the drawers in his dresser looking almost as if someone had been searching through them, he'd headed out to the arcade. What better way to avoid a problem than to play games, right?

Of course, the fact that he was still there, packing away high score after high score on his favorite games after the sun was starting to set when there a possibly serial killer lurking out there, was it's own problem, but when had he ever given things like that any consideration?

It was slow going. He was starting to be able to hold his own, but he wasn't being defensive at all, focusing mainly on trying to out-do the opponent in damage. In an odd way, that was sort of how Kanji himself fought.

"Whatever you say," he replied off-handedly. Something about the victims matched up, though... it was at the tip of his tongue, but he couldn't pinpoint what it was. He had to read those articles again and see if he could think of it, maybe bust the case wide open and at least discern a motive. That's how it worked in the movies, right?

"Oh, for-- this guy's a cheap bastard! Quit usin' the same damn move!" He shouted at the screen then.

It was late afternoon when Loki passed the arcade. He was heading from the Shibusen library to the antique bookstore he'd heard about when the flashing lights and sounds from inside the building caught his eye.

What sort of machines were these?

Cautiously, Loki pushed the door open and stepped inside. While he was glancing around to be sure that it wasn't against the rules to be in here, he caught sight of a familiar figure.

"Bakura?" he called, walking further inside.

Back, down, B, A. Well, if he said so. Back-down, not down-back... his mind got them backwards at first. When it failed and he did some dopey punch, Kanji growled his mild frustration. Did people like Yosuke-senpai and that creepy Kubo kid actually take time to memorize this shit?

This was more homework than a game!

On his third try, however, he waited until the other guy got close, then pulled off his counter. Okay, so this guy he picked was more a 'make a move and I punish you' kind of character. That was kind of cool.

"So what score'd you get on the other game?" He had to know whether he needed to sneak back here and try for the top again soon.

"Guy probably didn't think he'd get a challenger so quick. Might even notice that MAO ain't at the top of the list, get all fired up n' work toward somethin' higher."

Kanji blinked, finishing the round, then realized what he'd said. W-wait...!

"Is that what these are?" Loki peered around. How strange all these things looked, with their flashing lights and gleaming surfaces and whirring beeping noises!

But if they were games, he was certainly interested in learning how to play them.

Whew.

He shrugged.

"I guess. I wouldn't know." His score for this game was terrible, not even worthy of putting up on this thing's scoreboard. He didn't really care much; it wasn't his kind of thing anyway.

He backed away from the game and stuffed his hands in his pockets.

"...Tried the claw machines?" A random question, but he was rather proud of his offerings. Minato had ordered a lot to be put into one of them.

"Never even heard of one," Loki admitted. "How does one play?"

"Tch! Good? 'Course they are! Why the hell wouldn't they be?"

He shrugged again. "I know the guy that made what's in these ones. Busts his ass to make 'em."
topgun_textiles: (Lemme set things straight with you.)

"Those UFO catcher machines, right? I always hated 'em... most of what's in 'em looks like shit." Some were cute, but for the most part you always had ones with lopsided faces or wonky eyes...

But in the machine just down the way? Nearly a dozen Jack Frost dolls, each of them different in their own little way, but all made in what looked like the softest material. Even had little jingle bells in their neck fringe.

He blinked, and found himself wandering over as well. He'd made a point to tell Minato to tighten the claw's grip a little so people could actually win what was inside. He'd lost more than a few claw machine games as a little kid due to the flimsy grip...

But he was interested, right here and now. Was he going to nab a Jack?

...Was the grip too tight, or was he just that good?

"Arisato-san was tellin' me the claw grip's too light. Guess not..." And now that he thought about it, it seemed he thought better of ordering the claw machine that let you catch live lobsters.

Because, really.

He hummed his acknowledgement.

"Well, congrats, man. I'm sure the guy that made 'em's feelin' pretty good that people are winning the Jack Frosts."

...Whoops. Uh. He shrugged.

"Least, that's what he calls 'em. I guess they kinda look like snowmen."

"Yeah, he's... an all right guy. Kind of an asshole at times, but he's workin' on it," he replied off-handedly.

"Anyway... it's late and I was gonna start headin' home anyway. You done here? Two people makes it a little harder for a killer t'pick a target."
