Yes...and yes, I do have to argue with my fellow officials, as you put it. When a person is put on trial, the defense attorney attempts to prove innocence, while a prosecutor works toward a guilty verdict. Taken together, their arguments lead them to the truth.

And, cross-examination pertains to questioning witnesses and the defendant - that is, the suspect - himself. One searches for contradictions in a testimony, and draws out the needed information from it.
