It wouldn't be inaccurate to say Rangiku didn't expect them to be that large. A strong feeling of surprise is noticeable for the briefest of moments as she gets over it.

Upon seeing the little girl, a brief memory flashes through Rangiku's thoughts. She simply sees herself as a slum kid, like most of the other residents of the Rukongai. She lies there cold, hungry, and nearly dying as three grown men take pieces of her soul and seal them within an item to try and appease it. The memory quickly leaves her mind as it's replaced with a fury and a strong intent to protect the girl.

Had Kaoru hesitated a moment longer, Rangiku would have taken over and tried to combat it herself but this was not necessary. With Kaoru's determination revitalized, she quickly agrees to her offer. Yes! I'm ready!
