The only real problem he was seeing here was that he would still need another weapon -- not a person, exactly, but something sharp at least, as he doubted he could do anything with just his hands, even if he could react before the enemy.

As for his own clumsiness, it should hardly have come as a surprise. Not everyone had spent their lives training to fight. Some people had more pressing concerns than killing others with their bare hands.
