There's a grim silence in the clinic, broken only by the complaints of some patient that is still there or the adjustments the medical staff makes on the numerous stretches, supplies, and furnishings prepared for today's mission.

A handful of guards are stationed outside, both to function as runners and to keep an eye on the mirror in case something less welcome than their agents coming home appears. Some of them are Australian, the promised agents from the Oceania branch from Deathscythe Mjolnir.

"Detective."

That was all the greeting that he gave. Alucard took a protective post standing next to Raidou.

"Alucard-san..."

Raidou looked up at him, then back down. He didn't know what to do.

"Let us wait here a bit longer to see how Edgeworth will be. Then, let's go home. All right?" His voice was soft.

He nodded without a word. Home... There was comfort in that word, even now.

"I haven't been giving much attention to Kemuri. I believe she is all right but she will be very happy to see you."

He can't talk about what happened just yet. Perhaps they'll get to that in time.

"Yes... I owe her a treat or two, I believe."

He was quiet for a moment.

"Alucard-san?"

"Yes, detective?"

"I'm sorry I could not return to you as I promised."

That, and what he said back in the caves... He hasn't exactly been an exemplary partner.

Alucard considered his partner for a moment before sliding down on the floor to sit next to him. "That is all right. You were unfortunately detained from keeping your promise. I found you instead so all is well."

"Thank you..."

He wished he could agree that all was well. His thoughts were still jumbled to the point he could barely think straight.

They were silent for the longest time while they waited for the results on Edgeworth. Once they knew what they were, he tugged on Raidou's sleeve. "Let's go home."

"Alright."

He would have liked to apologize to Edgeworth, but it didn't seem like they would be allowed to visit today.

Alucard was silent on the way back, weighed down with thoughts and words on everything that had happened.

Not all was gloom and doom. At least the kitten was quite happy to see them return!

Raidou was just as silent, though he was trying not to think. At this point, he wanted nothing more than to curl up in bed and not get up for a good while.

Coming home with Kemuri waiting at the door made his expression soften, and he knelt down to pick the kitten up. She meowed and nibbled on his fingers.

"I am home," he said with a tired smile, petting her.

Alucard hung up his cloak and slipped off his cavalier boots. As his partner played with the kitten, he got her fresh food and water and examined her litterbox.

When those chores had been completed, Alucard said, "Why don't you go take a shower? I will make us something warm to eat."

"I should..." he agreed as Kemuri slipped away to eat. Truth to be told, he felt filthy. He slipped in the bathroom and tossed away the dirty clothes, feeling a pang of nausea upon touching the dried blood stains.

While in shower, he found himself leaning against the wall. Thoughts of the past few days were spinning in his head; fighting Kenshin, finding Alucard on top of a building, being captured by a raven... the things he said to Kanji and Franziska... Edgeworth's blood on his sword...

He shivered in spite of the warm water.

Fortunately after living together for so long, Alucard managed to learn how to make things from Raidou's culture. Or close to it.

By the time Raidou exited the shower, a bowl of miso and fried rice awaited him.

The detective came out wrapped in a robe, leaving his clothes to be washed later. He didn't have much of an appetite, but seeing as his partner had gone through the trouble of cooking, he sat down to eat anyway.

"Thank you."

Eating something always seemed to help a little bit. Just the ritual of it helped calm Alucard down. There was enough for later so he stored the remaining food away.

"You should try to get some rest, Raidou."

He did feel a little better with a full stomach. The idea of sleeping gave him mixed feelings, however; while a respite from all of this was a welcome thought, he dreaded the nightmares it might bring along with it.

"I suppose so."

Alucard noted the hesitation as he cleaned up their meal. He took his own shower and dressed for sleep. He walked back to the living room. "Raidou? Would it help...if I was near somehow while you were sleeping?"

Raidou had sat down on the couch in the mean time. He had only meant to sit for a bit, but as soon as he did, it was overwhelmingly tempting to just lie down and sleep right there and then.

He looked back up at Alucard's suggestion. Maybe it was the familiarity born from spending so much time together; either way, the need to have his partner close by overpowered any feeling of embarrassment or shame.

"Would you mind?"

In response, Alucard wrestled the mattress from his bed and set it out in the living room. He had to displace some furniture in order to make it work. In short order, the dhampir set up a place to sleep next to the couch. He supposed it was a little odd. The detective in a robe on the couch and him in just a pair of black silk pants and his gold cross on the mattress. But whatever would make Raidou comfortable.

Raidou quietly forced himself back up and brought the covers of his bed to the living room, collapsing back on the couch. The exhaustion was crushing, but Alucard's presence, at least, felt soothing; certainly better than cowering in a dark bedroom, alone with his own thoughts.

"Thank you, Alucard-san."

The dhampir moved himself so he could be in touching distance if Raidou needed to touch his shoulder to make sure he was still there. "Good night, Raidou."

Kemuri mewed and curled herself by Raidou's head. That was a much better place to sleep in her opinion.
