"There appear to be many that believe that, but I would prefer not to test out such a theory without any evidence to the contrary first. There are far more lives at stake here than just my own or that of any possible partner I may decide on, after all." That wasn't to mention that he had far more important matters to attend to that most others were overlooking, but that was more than fine with him.

"I know a pair who work together as a Weapon and Meister team," L said, chewing his thumb. "Neither are large men, neither has much experience in combat. One scarcely even moves. But they do very well together."

"I see, that does appear to change things," he thoughtfully murmured to begin with before refocusing his attention on the other man. "These individuals are people from your own world, or have you come to trust them from your time in this world?"

"My apologies if I have offended you in any way," the Judge said before offering the other man a pleasant smile to help diffuse the situation. "It is sometimes difficult to stop thinking in terms and methods in line with my occupation."

"I'm not offended," L said, as if the possibility alone was unsettling and strange. "Of course an investigator would think in such a way. You're correct to be curious, and I couldn't fault you for what comes naturally."
L's words were strangely detached, as if he was saying something he'd memorized by rote prior to their conversation.
