Yuri had to hold himself back from raising a brow at the other man's choice of words. Despite what Ryuzaki wore, and the appearance he gave off, there appeared to be quite a keen and intelligent mind hidden within. Not that he allowed such an observation to become known to the other man, but it was something that he found more than interesting to discover.

"There appear to be many that believe that, but I would prefer not to test out such a theory without any evidence to the contrary first. There are far more lives at stake here than just my own or that of any possible partner I may decide on, after all." That wasn't to mention that he had far more important matters to attend to that most others were overlooking, but that was more than fine with him.

L had been blessed since an early age with the powerful ability to act like a fool, but it was an act he could keep up for only so long. Yuri wouldn't be the first person to be surprised by the realization that he wasn't as spacey as he often chose to appear.

"I know a pair who work together as a Weapon and Meister team," L said, chewing his thumb. "Neither are large men, neither has much experience in combat. One scarcely even moves. But they do very well together."

"So you've seen them in combat together?" Yuri asked in return. While he may have been voicing his concern about being a danger to others for being a non-combatant, it was far from the truth. The matter of fact was that he simply didn't want somebody being that close to him, which was why he had no interest in searching for a partner.

Besides, with his line of work, there was no need for such a thing either.

"I have not," L said, tilting his head as if to see Yuri from a different angle. "I've not been close enough to a combat situation to judge for myself. But I trust these two individuals, and I trust the information I have regarding their success record."

Yuri regarded the other man thoughtfully as those words were spoken. The conviction within was obvious, and while he'd give every impression of understanding and acknowledging Ryuzaki's words, the Judge had no intention of ever allowing somebody that close.

"I see, that does appear to change things," he thoughtfully murmured to begin with before refocusing his attention on the other man. "These individuals are people from your own world, or have you come to trust them from your time in this world?"

Over the course of L's short but intense life, he'd learned that there were different types of "close". To others, "close" might mean there was safety in demonstrating vulnerability and weakness. To him, "close" meant that he trusted a person not to kill him. And in any world, the orphans who had been groomed from an early age to think and even behave like him were the only ones he was relatively sure didn't have this motivation.

"Does it matter? You seem very interested in the identity of the people I trust."

"No, I suppose not," Yuri said, entirely unperturbed by the man's outburst. Instead he calmly shrugged his shoulders with his words before glancing to the side - the gesture done to give the impression that he meant no offence as he murmured, "It was more curiosity to know whether or not these were people trusted from your own world, or if you've come to trust them in this world. Bonds of either variety would be strong regardless, I'm certain."

"'Trust' rather does imply a strong bond, doesn't it?" L asked, tilting his head to the side. "Where such a bond is established should be irrelevant. Does your curiosity customarily extend as far as the irrelevant?"

It appeared as though any little attempt to gather information would be fought at every step of the way by this man. That thought alone was interesting, and he had to prevent himself from smirking lightly at the mere notion of it. He would concede for now though, and he wasn't above showing some levels of submissiveness so long as it suited his purpose. Much like right now as he inclined his head in a silent gesture of acknowledgement on Yuri's end.

"My apologies if I have offended you in any way," the Judge said before offering the other man a pleasant smile to help diffuse the situation. "It is sometimes difficult to stop thinking in terms and methods in line with my occupation."

It was a gentle, mostly civil, and completely determined fight. Yuri was certainly correct in the observation that it would be ongoing.

"I'm not offended," L said, as if the possibility alone was unsettling and strange. "Of course an investigator would think in such a way. You're correct to be curious, and I couldn't fault you for what comes naturally."

L's words were strangely detached, as if he was saying something he'd memorized by rote prior to their conversation.

If Yuri noted the tone of the other man's voice, he didn't show it on his expression. All he did was file the piece of information away as he gave Ryuzaki that same pleasant smile, as if pleased to hear that he hadn't offended the other man.

"I am pleased to hear that you understand," he smoothly murmured with a slight nod. "However, I mustn't hold you up any longer, Mr. Ryuzaki."

"I really should be on my way..." L agreed, not taking his eyes off Yuri as he started to edge around him to continue on his way.

The fact that the man kept staring at him while edging away was a cause for concern, but he did his best to keep his expression light-hearted. "If you are in need of anything in the future, then do not hesitate to ask. I will be more than happy to help," Yuri offered moments before allowing the other man to leave.
